Fury Druid

Introduction

The Fury Druid is an extremely powerful melee build that can achieve some of the highest possible damage and Life values in Diablo 2. The build centers around maximizing the Shape Shifting Skill tree with some support from the Summoning Skill tree. Fury is your main source of Physical Damage, while Feral Rage provides additional Faster Run/Walk, Life Stolen per Hit, + x% Damage and +x% Attack Rating bonuses. Heart of Wolverine grants more Attack Rating and Physical Damage for Fury. With his powerful melee attacks and trusty summons, the Fury Druid is a devastating force!

Sunder Charm Setup

Patch 2.5 introduces a new way of breaking Immunities: Sunder Charms. Any enemy that would be Immune to your damage type is instead reduced to 95% Resistance, before any other Resistance reductions apply. (e.g. Conviction, Lower Resist) The Charm also reduces YOUR Resistance against the sundered damage type! Check out our post on Sunder Charms to learn more about these new Charms. The following setup uses Bone Break, allowing you to farm anywhere you want.

To optimize this Sunder Charm utilize Amplify Damage or Decrepify. Great sources of these are Atma's Scarab and The Reaper's Toll on your Mercenary.

Counteract the negative effect of Bone Break with our String of Ears.

Damage

Fury* deals 5 Physical Damage attacks on a single target or five hits on five separate targets.

Feral Rage* acts as a "Power Up" Skill that provides additional Faster Run/Walk, Life Stolen per Hit, +x% Damage and +x% Attack Rating bonuses. A successful hit from Feral Rage triggers a "red ball" that spins around your Character, indicating its power level. The bigger the ball, the more powerful the stat bonuses.

Utility

Heart of Wolverine* provides an additional Physical Damage and Attack Rating for you and your Mercenary, Summons, and Party Members.

Oak Sage* provides an additional Life for you, your Mercenary, Summons, and Party Members.

Summon Grizzly* summons a grizzly bear to fight by your side and acts as a front-line tank.

Lycanthropy* is a passive skill which provides you with Life and Duration for Werewolf.

Werewolf* grants you the ability to transform into a Werewolf! The Werewolf form, grants Increased Attack Speed, Attack Rating, Life and Stamina.

Attributes

Note: This section provides you with the standard Stat Point allocation. Build Variants can require a different allocation!

Strength

Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to equip all of your gear. Take into account how much Strength your gear provides when equipped.

Dexterity

Allocate enough Stat Points into Dexterity to equip all of your gear. Take into account how much Dexterity your gear provides when equipped.

Vitality

Allocate any remaining Stat Points into Vitality after meeting Strength, Dexterity and Energy requirements.

Energy

Do not allocate any Stat Points into Energy. Mana costs are covered by “x% Mana Stolen per Hit” or “+x Mana after each Kill” on gear.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary serves an incredibly important role to the overall success of your build. They can be a front line tank, provide a pivotal Aura, and/or deal Physical Damage to kill enemies with Immunity to your Skill set.

Act 2 Desert Mercenary

The Act 2 Desert Mercenary is hired from Greiz.
He can be equipped with a Spear or a Polearm, a Body Armor and a Helmet. 
Every Act 2 Mercenary has access to an Aura and uses Jab as his base Attack. The Aura activates once the Mercenary has engaged in combat and remains active between traveling to and from town. The Auras available are based on what difficulty you hire the Mercenary from.

Might Reaper's Toll

Reaper’s Toll, Might

Use a Desert Mercenary with Might Aura to significantly boost your Physical Damage.
Equip him with The Reaper’s Toll for a 33% Chance to cast Decrepify on striking, slowing down and increasing Physical Damage dealt to enemies. Decrepify can even break some Physical Immunities.

The Mercenary is hard to keep alive until you have the minimum gear recommended in this guide. Remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your Belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.

If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPCs in each Act. This does come with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. Keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.

Playstyle

General

  • In combat make sure that your Feral Rage is fully charged at all times to give you Faster Run/Walk, Life Steal, Damage and Attack Rating bonuses. Each successful hit will increase the size of the swirling red ball until it is maxed out, indicating the maximum strength of the skill.
  • Fury will serve as your main source of damage. Once you are fully buffed from Feral Rage, use Fury to deal massive amounts of Physical Damage to your enemies.
  • Use Summon Grizzly in dangerous situations to take the heat off of you.
  • Keep your powerful summons up, recasting them when they die. Summon Grizzly and Heart of Wolverine or Oak Sage are important to keep around.
  • While Fury can be a single-target Skill, it will try to target any monsters that come within range. Try keeping your Summon Grizzly and Mercenary between you and incoming monsters to allow fury to prioritize high value targets.

Immunities

  • Use a Mercenary with The Reaper's Toll for Decrepify to deal with Physical Immunes and dish out more Physical Damage.
  • Bone Break breaks ALL Physical Immune monsters and brings them to 95% resistance. Pair this with a source of Amplify Damage or Decrepify.

Late-Game

  • At the beginning of each run, buff yourself by swapping to Call to Arms and cast Battle Command then Heart of wolverine. Cast Battle Command again followed by Battle Orders and finally Werewolf. Switch back to your main setup.

Breakpoints

Breakpoints in Diablo 2 are the minimum values required to reduce the frames of an action. Below are the important breakpoints considered for this build. For more information on the mechanics involved, check out our in-depth Resource: Breakpoints.

Increased Attack Speed (IAS)

Increased Attack Speed speeds up your attack animations. Weapon bases have different IAS breakpoints. Values for recommended weapon options provided below. Consult the d2planner for other bases.

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)

Faster Hit Recovery increases survivability. Aim for the 42% or 86% FHR Breakpoint.

Hardcore

For all Hardcore gameplay, your primary concern is increasing your Resistances, Damage Reduction, Chance to Block and Life pool. This can mean sacrificing overall power level for a more secure playstyle.

This build is Hardcore viable. If you are unaccustomed to this playstyle, we recommend trying this build on Softcore to gain experience on how to successfully pilot it.

Stat Point Changes

  • The only thing that changes for Attributes point investment is Dexterity. Invest enough points into Dexterity until you have reached the maximum 75% Chance to Block. This value will change based on equipment stats, Character Level, and the Chance to Block on your shield.

  • Budget Example: Rhyme

  • End Game Example: Stormshield also has Physical Damage Reduction.

The Fury Druid Priority Stats:

Oath Feral Axe, Duress Light Plate, and both the Angelic Wings and Angelic Halo are great budget options for this build and greatly impact the build's performance. Death's Hand and Death's Guard grant IAS, Resistances, Life Steal, and Cannot Be Frozen.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary is an important role for this build. The suggested setup provides your Mercenary a source of Might and Meditation. The Insight Scythe and Smoke Leather Armor provide some damage and survivability.

Skills

Put 1 Point into each of the following Skills:

Phoenix Monarch provides a lot of Enhanced Damage and Redemption which sustains Life and Mana from corpses. Use Bone Break instead of Sharp Grand Charm of Vita to enable farming of any monster.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary provides Physical Damage and Decrepify to break Immunities and/or lower Physical Resistances. This setup with 2 Ruby Jewel of Fervor in Guillaume's Face and The Reaper’s Toll allow your Mercenary to reach the 75% Increased Attack Speed Breakpoint.

Use Ribcracker as our main weapon for the IAS and large amount of x% Chance of Crushing Blow. Dracul's Grasp gives us Life Tap for Life sustain. Thundergod's Vigor works well against Uber Mephisto's Lightning attacks. Use Fade proc for more Resistances and Physical Damage Reduction Treachery Archon Plate. Use Bone Break instead of Sharp Grand Charm of Vita to enable farming of any monster.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary provides Physical Damage and Conviction. Conviction lowers the defense of bosses which increase the chance to hit them. This can be used for Lilith, Izual, and Duriel as they are difficult to hit as a melee character. DON'T expect your Mercenary to survive main Uber Tristram though!

Setup

The Damage Fury Druid's is very similar to the Standard variant. Using Brand instead of call to arms in the Weapon-Swap, allows us to proc Amplify Damage with a 35% Chance on Striking. After the proc we swap back to Grief Phase Blade and play normally. Hit the 42% or 86% FHR Breakpoint to recovering quickly in combat. Spiritual Grand Charm of Vita are a decent option, but we recommend Sharp Grand Charm of Vita for more damage due to this build having such a large Life pool. Use Bone Break instead of Sharp Grand Charm of Vita to enable farming of any monster.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary is a great additional source of Physical Damage with Concentration from Pride. Use Vampire Gaze and Shaftstop for Physical Damage Reduction.

Focus on survivability by adding Physical Damage Reduction, over capped Resistances to counter enemy Conviction, Maximum Chance to Block (75%) with Stormshield, and 42% or 86% Faster Hit Recovery. Additionally, Dracul's Grasp, and Shimmering Small Charm of Vita give you the ultimate tank build! Use Summon Grizzly more often to check for dangerous situations and have him tank. Use Bone Break instead of Sharp Grand Charm of Vita to enable farming of any monster.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary provides Physical Damage and Decrepify to break Immunities and/or lower Physical Resistances. This setup with 2 Ruby Jewel of Fervor in Guillaume's Face and The Reaper’s Toll allow your Mercenary to reach the 75% Increased Attack Speed Breakpoint.
