The Lightning/Chain Lightning Sorceress is the most versatile Sorceress in the game and one of the most versatile builds period. She decimates any Hell area, particularly excelling at running Baal, Uber Key Bosses, and Arcane Sanctuary. This build can clear dense packs of mobs as easily as it can snipe Elites. It even vaporizes Uber Bosses and Diablo Clone with the right setups and approach. There is nothing this live wire can't fry! Fully-loaded, the Lightning Sorceress fulfills the end-game fantasies of high mobility and incredible top-end Damage.
Dealing exclusively Lightning Damage with her Primary Skills Lightning and Chain Lightning, the Lightning Sorceress has few Immunity-related issues after obtaining Crack of the Heavens and/or with Infinity equipped on her Mercenary. Yet, because most Farming Spots have Lightning Immune monsters, this build has limited options for pre-Crack of the Heavens farming. Despite this early-game limitation, there are countless ways to build and play a Lightning Sorceress. So up the voltage and overload the transformers, because this lady is a real circuit breaker!

Sunder Charm Setup
Patch 2.5 introduced a new way of breaking Immunities: Sunder Charms. Any enemy that would be Immune to your damage type is instead reduced to 95% Resistance, before any other Resistance reductions apply. The Charm also reduces YOUR Resistance against the sundered damage type! Check out our post on Sunder Charms to learn more about these new Charms. The following setup uses Crack of the Heavens, allowing you to farm anywhere you want.
Gear Changes
To optimize this Sunder Charm you need as much -% Enemy Lightning Resistance as possible. Equip Crescent Moon and Griffon's Eye to accomplish this. Infinity on the Mercenary makes this setup even more effective. Achieve the 117% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint with the rest of your gear.
Counteract the negative effect of Crack of the Heavens with Lightning Resistance Charms, Gloves, Boots, and Jewelry.
Terror Zones
The new Terror Zone mechanic combined with Sunder Charms open up a wide range of farmable areas. The following list highlights the best and worst Terror Zones for this build. With the Sunder Charm Setup, more Terror Zones become accessible. Learn more about Terror Zones here and see how they stack up in our Terror Zone Tier List.

Damage
Lightning* is your Primary Damage Skill. It produces a long bolt of Lightning which travels in a straight line, piercing and dealing Lightning Damage to all enemies it passes through.
Chain Lightning* is your Secondary Damage Skill. It produces a long bolt of Lightning which travels in a straight line until making contact with a enemy. The bolt then seeks out nearby targets until reaching its maximum number of "hits" (based on its Level). It can seek new targets or double back on previous ones in the process. This Skill deals Lightning Damage each time it passes through an enemy.
Charged Bolt* is best used against tanky Single Targets/Bosses (including Uber Bosses and Diablo Clone). It emits Lightning Bolts in a cone in front of your Sorceress. The number of Bolts is based on its Level.
Static Field* is great to use against Bosses and groups of monsters in High Player Count games. Each cast uses Lightning Damage to lower nearby monster Life by 25% of their remaining Life. This Skill can reduce monsters' Life to 1 in Normal, 33% of total Life in Nightmare, and 50% in Hell.
Thunder Storm* strikes a random nearby enemy with a bolt of Lightning every couple of seconds.
Teleport* is an essential Sorceress Skill used for mobility. It repositions your Character and Mercenary to your cursor's position. Repeatedly cast it to cover long distances.
Telekinesis* allows you to use a Waypoint, enter a Portal, or pick up utility items (Potions, Scrolls, or Gold) from a distance.
Frozen Armor* increases your Defense rating and briefly Freezes enemies that strike your Sorceress. It doesn't work against ranged attacks.
Warmth* provides you with passive Mana Regeneration based on its Skill Level.
Lightning Mastery* passively boosts your Lightning Skill Damage.
* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR) * Skills that do NOT utilize either FCR or IAS

Mercenary
Your Mercenary serves an incredibly important role to the overall success of your build. They can be a front line tank, provide a pivotal Aura, and/or deal Physical Damage to kill enemies with Immunity to your Skill set.
Act 2 Desert Mercenary
The Act 2 Desert Mercenary can be hired from Greiz. He can be equipped with a Spear or a Polearm, a Body Armor and a Helmet. Every Act 2 Mercenary has access to an Aura and uses Jab as his base Attack. The Aura activates once the Mercenary has engaged in combat and remains active between traveling to and from town. The Auras available are based on what difficulty you hire the Mercenary from.
Infinity, Might
Use a Desert Mercenary with Might Aura to deal with enemies that are Lightning Immune. A Holy Freeze Aura Mercenary can also be used for the Crowd Control it provides. Equip him with Infinity to reduce enemy Resistances and Defense with its Conviction Aura, drastically boosting damage. This Aura is also capable of breaking Immunities, including most Lightning Immunes.
Mercenary Gear Options
Your Mercenary needs maximum Resistances, Life Leech, a high damage Weapon, and high Defense and/or Damage Reduction to stay alive reliably. Cannot Be Frozen is also a great stat for maintaining Mercenary DPS and leech. Ethereal gear is preferred since it doesn't lose durability. Gear Options at each Gear Level perform equally well in different situations; choose based on Farming Spots and/or personal preference.

The Mercenary is hard to keep alive until you have the minimum gear recommended in this guide. Remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your Belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.
If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPCs in each Act. This does come with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. Keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.
Playstyle
General
Cast Telekinesis on Waypoints to activate them, on Town Portals to get in or out of town, and on Red Portals to go through them. This allows you to travel through the game faster. Telekinesis can also be used to open chests and pop other clickables for loot.
If you have Harmony equipped on Weapon-Swap, use it to travel faster through town.
Before starting your Magic Find/Experience run, cast Frozen Armor and Thunder Storm once each. Refresh these buffs as soon as they expire (approx. every 2-3 minutes).
Use Teleport to travel to your Farming Spot or between Elite Packs. Teleport is also crucial for repositioning.
Engage enemies with either Lightning or Chain Lightning depending on the situation. Lightning is stronger against isolated, single targets and mobs in single-file lines. Chain Lightning is stronger against groups of spread-out mobs.
Since both Lightning and Chain Lightning have high Damage ranges (with almost non-existent minimum damage), the number of casts required to kill your target mob(s) may vary drastically.
For Solo Gameplay:
For maximum Solo-farming efficiency, target and kill Elite Monsters with Lightning and then immediately proceed to the next Elite(s). Don't waste time clearing minions or regular mobs while playing Solo or /Players1 on Single Player.
For High Player Count:
Mostly use Chain Lightning to clear Elite Packs and high mob density. Use Lightning to finish off high value targets (such as Elites) after multiple Chain Lightning casts.
Primarily use Lightning against mobs in single-file lines (such as in Arcane Sanctuary).
When encountering high mob density with high Life (e.g. Baal Waves, High Player Count + any high density), first cast Static Field 1-3 times at close range, and then finish the mobs off with Chain Lightning and/or Lightning.
For Bosses:
First cast Static Field 3-5 times in range of Act Bosses (such as Baal), Uber Bosses, or Diablo Clone in order to weaken them down to or near the 50% Life cap (in Hell).
Next, "Telestomp" the Boss and repeatedly cast Charged Bolt in melee range. Stay directly atop the Boss to maximize Charged Bolt's damage. You can also use Lightning for a less consistent, safer approach.
Immunities
Crack of the Heavens sets allImmune to Lightning monsters to 95% Lightning Resistance, allowing any sources of -x% to Enemy Lightning Resistance to take effect (including Conviction Aura from Infinity at 1/5th effectiveness).
Break most Lightning Immunes using a Lower Resist Charge Wand on Weapon-Swap before obtaining Crack of the Heavens and/or Infinity or Plagues on your Mercenary.
For unbreakable Lightning Immunes, "Telestomp" them with your Mercenary to kill them with his Physical DamageJab attack. Alternatively, you can skip these monsters.
Always skip Unique monsters that are both highly Lightning and PhysicalResistant or Immune.
Late-Game
Before starting your Magic Find/Experience run, first cast Battle Command 2 times and then Battle Orders once using Call to Arms. Refresh these buffs as soon as they expire (approx. every 2-3 minutes).
Use Teleport to reposition your Mercenary close to enemies to apply Conviction Aura from his Infinity, reducing their Resistances and breaking Lightning Immunities. This also helps with procing Lower Resist using Plagues.
Optimal Loot/Experience Farming Strategies
Baal- None of the monsters in Baal Waves are naturally Lightning Immune. A skillful combination of Static Field, Lightning, and Chain Lightning makes short work of Baal and his Waves no matter the Player Count. This build's fast Teleport is also incredible for efficient navigation to the Throne of Destruction.
Uber Keys - Given her insanely high Teleport speed and the lack of troublesome Lightning Immunes surrounding Uber Key Bosses, the Lightning Sorceress is one of the most if not THE most efficient Uber Key farmer in the game.
Arcane Sanctuary with 5-8 Players in the Game or /Players7 on Single Player - Having narrow paths and no Lightning Immune mobs, this is an ideal Farming Spot for the Lightning Sorceress. Even a Starter Lightning Sorceress can effectively farm this area (see Build Variants). Use Teleport to gather Specters and travel between Specter packs; use Lightning to accurately "zap" them over the solid platforms. Use Telekinesis to quickly open the Super Chests at the ends. The Specters and Super Chests in this area are highly efficient sources of Runes, Charms, Jewels, Gems, and Jewelry.
Breakpoints
Breakpoints in Diablo 2 are the minimum values required to reduce the frames of an action. Below are the important breakpoints considered for this build. For more information on the mechanics involved, check out our in-depth Resource: Breakpoints.
Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
Faster Cast Rate speeds up your casting animation for spells. Aim for the special 117% FCR Breakpoint used by Lightning and Chain Lightning on the Standard Build. 105% FCR is sufficient for Teleport. Note: FCR only controls the animation speed of the Character, and not any internal Cooldowns spells have.

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
Faster Hit Recovery increases survivability. Aim for the 86% FHR Breakpoint on the Standard Build.
The Lightning Sorceress can become Hardcore viable with key changes to Gear, Stat Point allocation, and Skills. Review the changes below before building this character in Hardcore, as some of these changes differ significantly from the Standard Build.
Gear Changes
Damage Reduction: Equip Stormshield instead of Spirit. The% Damage Reduction and Increased Chance of Blocking granted by Stormshield both drastically improve your survivability. A setup using Stormshield socketed with a Ber Rune and either Enigma or Chains of Honor exceeds the 50% Damage Reduction cap. Crown of Ages and Verdungo's Hearty Cord are also great options for achieving high Damage Reduction on a HardcoreLightning Sorceress.
Faster Cast Rate: It can be difficult to achieve the 117% Faster Cast Rate (FCR)Breakpoint while prioritizing Damage Reduction on this build. Magefist and Trang-Oul's Claws are the Gloves that make it possible. Skin of the Vipermagi and Fortitude are the best Body Armor options for shoring up your FCR. Jewelry is also a great source of FCR.
Stacking Resistances: Stack your Fire/Lightning/Cold Resistances beyond the default maximum values of 75 each (175 total in Hell). Stacking 85 additional Resistances in Hell completely negates the Conviction Aura of any Elite Boss or the Oblivion Knight's Lower ResistCurse. Beware of encountering both at the same time! Consider the primary damage type(s) of the monsters in the area you want to farm. Skin of the Vipermagi, Chains of Honor, and Fortitude are great Body Armor options for stacking Resistances on this build. Crown of Ages is a solid Helmet option. Boots, Jewelry, and Charms are also ideal sources of Resistances.
Faster Hit Recovery: Aim for at least the 42% Faster Hit RecoveryBreakpoint with your Charms, Boots, Helmet, and/or Shael Runes socketed into gear. Faster Hit Recovery is not as important when going for maximum Chance to Block (75%). You mainly rely on the Faster Block RateBreakpoints attained by Stormshield socketed with a Ber Rune (27%) or Stormshield socketed with a Shael Rune (48%).
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear Stormshield.
Allocate enough Stat Points into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%) while having Stormshield equipped.
Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Skill Point Changes
There are no required Skill Point changes for a HardcoreLightning Sorceress. However, allocating 1 Skill Point into Energy Shield and additional Skill Points into Telekinesis provides you with a decent Energy Shield, which redirects a percentage of the damage you take to your Mana Pool instead of your Life Pool. Energy Shield allows you to absorb high amounts of Physical Damage, such as from Undead Stygian Doll death explosions. It also provides some additional protection against Elemental Damage. See the "Hardcore" Build Variant below for additional suggestions and visuals.

Setup
The Starter variant of the Lightning Sorceress meets the minimum gear requirements for farming the Starter ✔ tagged areas in the "Farming Spots" section above. These areas can be Solo-farmed by this setup (/Players1 on Single Player) in both Nightmare and Hell difficulty. The Starter build can even farm Arcane Sanctuary in High Player Count games or /Players5-7 on Single Player. Prioritize + to Skills, Faster Cast Rate, Resistances, Life, and Mana on your gear. Use a Lower Resist Charge Wand on Weapon-Swap to break Lightning Immunity and reduce enemy Lightning Resistance. You can also use a Harmony on Weapon-Swap to travel faster through town. The Starter build achieves the 117% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint like the Standard setup. Follow the Sorceress Leveling Guide to get your Sorceress to Level 75.
Mercenary
The Starter Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 2 Holy FreezeMercenary with Insight for Crowd Control and Mana Regeneration. Mercenaries require Resistances, Life Leech, and/or Damage Reduction to stay alive. Smoke is a cheap Body Armor option for Resistances, while Bulwark is the cheapest Helmet that provides Life Leech and Damage Reduction.

Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear your gear. Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Setup
This is the Standard Best in Slot (BiS) Lightning Sorceress featured in the beginning of the guide. It is the balanced "jack-of-all-trades" version, capable of performing the most tasks well. This variant is the point of comparison for all other variants. It carefully balances Damage, Magic Find, Defensive Stats, and mobility. This is an ideal build for farming High Player CountArcane Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep/Throne of Destruction, and Baal. Use Crack of the Heavens to deal more damage against Lightning Immunes. The Standard setup achieves the 117% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint.
Mercenary
The Standard Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 2 MightMercenary with Infinity for -85% to Enemy Lightning Resistance from its Conviction Aura. Fortitude and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor maximize this Mercenary's damage and survivability.
Skills
Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills: 1. Telekinesis 2. Teleport (if no Enigma) 3. Static Field 4. Frozen Armor 5. Warmth 6. Thunder Storm

Put all remaining Skill Points into Warmth past Level 94.
Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength and Dexterity to wear your gear. Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Setup
This variant specializes in Solo, fast-paced Elite sniping (/Players1 on Single Player). Magic Find is the core focus of this setup. It exclusively uses Magic Find Charms in its inventory aside from Annihilus, Hellfire Torch, and Gheed's Fortune. 3-Piece Tal Rasha's Set (Tal Rasha's Adjudication, Tal Rasha's Guardianship, and Tal Rasha's Fine-Spun Cloth) is used for solid Magic Find, Faster Cast Rate, and Resistances. Damage is sacrificed for Magic Find wherever possible. Use Crack of the Heavens to deal more damage against Lightning Immunes. The Solo Magic Find variant achieves the 117% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint like the Standard Build.
Mercenary
Just as with the Standard Build, the Solo Magic Find Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 2 MightMercenary with Infinity, Fortitude, and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor.
Skills
Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills: 1. Telekinesis 2. Teleport 3. Static Field 4. Frozen Armor 5. Warmth 6. Thunder Storm

Put all remaining Skill Points into Warmth past Level 95.
Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear your gear. Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Setup
This variant deals high Damage against mobs with high Lightning Resistance or broken Immunity to Lightning. Because Lightning Immunity/high Lightning Resistance is common in Hell, the Kill Speed setup outperforms the Standard Build in several Farming Spots. It vaporizes Chaos Sanctuary and Worldstone Keep in High Player Count games (/Players5-8 on Single Player). Even areas like Icy Cellar,Mausoleum, and Maggot Lair are "farmable" on this build. Crescent Moon is the core of this setup with its large -x% to Enemy Lightning Resistance stat. Griffon's Eye and Skin of the Vipermagi together provide additional -x% to Enemy Lightning Resistance, Faster Cast Rate, and Resistances. This variant has less Magic Find than the Standard Build; it also deals less damage against mobs with low Lightning Resistance. Using Crack of the Heavens allows this setup to deal even more damage against Lightning Immunes. The Kill Speed variant achieves the 117% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint like the Standard Build.
Mercenary
Just as with the Standard Build, the Kill Speed Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 2 MightMercenary with Infinity, Fortitude, and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor.
Skills
Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills: 1. Telekinesis 2. Teleport 3. Static Field 4. Frozen Armor 5. Warmth 6. Thunder Storm
Max out the following Skills in this order: 1. Lightning 2. Lightning Mastery 3. Chain Lightning 4. Charged Bolt 5. Nova
Put all remaining Skill Points into Warmth past Level 95.
Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear your gear. Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Setup
This variant achieves the 200% Faster Cast Rate (FCR) Breakpoint for maximum Teleport cast speed. It also achieves the 194% FCR Breakpoint for maximum Lightning and Chain Lightning cast speed. The Mobility setup sacrifices Magic Find and survivability for mobility and DPS. It excels at Teleporting to the Throne of Destruction (Baal), "Seal Popping" monsters for loot in Chaos Sanctuary, Arcane Sanctuary Specter/Super Chest farming, and other fast-paced farming that doesn't require Magic Find. Use Crack of the Heavens to deal more damage against Lightning Immunes.
Mercenary
Just as with the Standard Build, the Mobility Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 2 MightMercenary with Infinity, Fortitude, and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor.
Skills
Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills: 1. Telekinesis 2. Teleport 3. Static Field 4. Frozen Armor 5. Warmth 6. Thunder Storm
Max out the following Skills in this order: 1. Lightning 2. Lightning Mastery 3. Chain Lightning 4. Charged Bolt 5. Nova
Put all remaining Skill Points into Warmth past Level 95.
Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear your gear. Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Setup
The Ubers variant specializes in defeating the Uber Bosses, including mini-Ubers such as Lilith. It mainly uses Static Field and Charged Bolt for this purpose. Lightning is used against Uber Izual and Uber Baal due to their Chilling Armor reflect damage. -x% to Enemy Lightning Resistance, + to Skills, Damage Reduction, Resistances, and Life are priority stats on this setup. Swapping in Thundergod's Vigor and stacking Lightning Resistance allows this build to tank Uber Mephisto. Pre-buff Fade with Treachery prior to engaging the Ubers for massive boosts to Resistances and Damage Reduction. Using a Lower Resist Charge Wand on Weapon-Swap and Infinity on an Act 2 Mercenary enables you to maximize your damage output against all Uber Bosses except Uber Mephisto. This variant reaches the 105% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint for Charged Bolt cast speed.
Crack of the Heavens breaks Uber Mephisto's Lightning Immunity, allowing you to deal more damage to him. Use Lightning Resist Charms to counteract its negative effect.
Mercenary
The Ubers Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 5 FrenzyMercenary with 2x Plagues for their Lower Resist proc. This high Level Lower Resist breaks Uber Mephisto's Lightning Immunity. Vampire Gaze and Treachery make him tanky while avoiding high Defense. Note: It is better to use the Standard Act 2 Might Mercenary with Infinity against every Uber Boss besides Uber Mephisto.
Skills
Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills: 1. Telekinesis 2. Teleport 3. Static Field 4. Frozen Armor 5. Warmth 6. Thunder Storm
Max out the following Skills in this order: 1. Lightning 2. Lightning Mastery 3. Chain Lightning 4. Charged Bolt 5. Nova
Put all remaining Skill Points into Warmth past Level 95.
Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear your gear and enough into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%). Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.
Setup
For the Hardcore mode variant, aim for 50% Damage Reduction and maximum Chance to Block (75%) to guard against taking extreme amounts of Physical Damage. Additionally, overcap Resistances beyond the natural cap of 75% if possible to counteract hostile Conviction or Lower Resist. If you choose to use Crack of the Heavens, use Lightning Resist Charms to counteract the negative effect. This variant reaches the 117% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint like the Standard Build. Consult the "Hardcore" section for more detailed information.
Mercenary
The Hardcore Lightning Sorceress uses an Act 2 MightMercenary with Infinity for -85% to Enemy Lightning Resistance from its Conviction Aura. You can also use a Holy Freeze or Defiance Mercenary for additional safety. Cure provides Level 1 Cleansing Aura, which quickly removes Poison Damage and the Amplify Damage Curse. Chains of Honor is the best survivability option for this Mercenary with its Life Leech stat.
Skills
Allocate 1 Skill Point into Energy Shield and additional Skill Points into Telekinesis for a decent Energy Shield. The rest is the same as the Standard Build.
Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills: 1. Telekinesis 2. Teleport 3. Energy Shield 4. Static Field 5. Frozen Armor 6. Warmth 7. Thunder Storm
Max out the following Skills in this order: 1. Lightning 2. Lightning Mastery 3. Chain Lightning 4. Charged Bolt 5. Nova
Attributes
Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear your gear and enough into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%). Put all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Mechanics
Teleport
Teleport instantly moves you to a selected square on the visible screen in which you can stand. The game tries to to place you within a small radius around your cursor even if it would be impeded normally.
Teleport is not obstructed by walls or other impediments but can fail if your cursor is not completely passed those impediments when cast. Your Mercenary travels with you.
You can “extend” the visible screen by opening UI-windows like the Inventory or the Character screen. Continuously cast Teleport and drag your mouse to the edge of your screen.
The Mana cost of Teleport decreases with additional Skill Levels down to 1 Mana per cast. This can easily be achieved on this build with just 1 Skill Point into Teleport and + to Skills on gear.
You can use “ESC” to open the menu in single player to pause the game after a Teleport to determine if you are safe.
Teleport cast speed is affected by the Faster Cast RateBreakpoint that you achieve with your gear.
Lightning
Lightning pierces through monsters, dealing Lightning Damage to all monsters in its path. Line em' up and aim well!
This Skill frequently one-shots your target(s) with its enormous maximum damage. However, extra casts of this Skill are often needed due to its almost non-existent minimum damage (if rolling low/bad RNG).
This Skill benefits greatly from Conviction Aura, the Lower ResistCurse, and the -x% to Enemy Lightning Resistance stat on gear.
Lightning, along with its sister Skill below, uses special Faster Cast Rate (FCR)Breakpoints. Unlike Teleport and most Sorceress Skills which require 105% FCR or 200% FCR, Lightning requires 117% FCR or 194% FCR.
Chain Lightning
Chain Lightning arcs to nearby monsters after reaching its initial target. It arcs to a maximum number of monsters based on it's Level before expiring, dealing Lightning Damage to all monsters it passes through. Chain Lightning can seek out new targets or double back on previous ones depending on the number of nearby targets and where they are located.

Static Field
Static Field's range increases with its Level. It is the only thing that increases with its Level. 1 Skill Point and + to Skills from gear are sufficient for an effective Static Field in the late-game.
In the Nightmare and Hell difficulty you can't reduce a monsters' Life past certain thresholds. For Nightmare this threshold is at 33%, in Hell it is at 50%. You can get a little past this threshold if your enemy has negative Lightning Resistance.
In Normal difficulty you can bring a monster down to "1 Life". Static Field can't deal the final blow on a monster.
Static Field works on any monster you encounter that is not Lightning Immune, including all Act Bosses, Uber Bosses, and Diablo Clone.
Static Field reduces the current (remaining) Life of a monster by 25%. The Lightning Resistances of a monster will reduce its effectiveness.
Damage calculation: Monster Life = Current Life - ((Current Life * 0.75) * ((100-Lightning Resistance) / 100))
Unlike Lightning and Chain Lightning, this Skill uses the standard SorceressFaster Cast RateBreakpoints (105% and 200%).
Charged Bolt
Charged Bolt emits Lightning Bolts in a cone in front of your Sorceress. Each Bolt applies Lightning Damage to an enemy it makes contact with. This Skill can emit a maximum of 24 Bolts per cast based on its Level.
These Bolts do not pierce; they do not pass through enemies. They deal their damage and disappear upon making contact with an enemy.
If you Teleport directly on top of a single target ("Telestomp"), you can "shotgun" the target with Charged Bolt, hitting it with every Bolt at once. This is useful for applying consistent damage to Act Bosses, Elite Monsters, Uber Bosses, and Diablo Clone.
This Skill benefits greatly from Conviction Aura, the Lower ResistCurse, and the -x% to Enemy Lightning Resistance stat on gear.
Unlike Lightning and Chain Lightning, this Skill uses the standard SorceressFaster Cast RateBreakpoints (105% and 200%).
Thunder Storm
Thunder Storm is an offensive buff that strikes a random nearby enemy with a bolt of Lightning every couple of seconds. This buff's damage and duration increases with its Level. An Aura effect under your Sorceress indicates that this buff is active.
Every Bolt deals a consistent amount of Lightning Damage, often putting enemies in Hit Recovery. This mini-stun can be annoying, however, while trying to line up Specters for Lightning in Arcane Sanctuary. Thus, it is not recommended to use this Skill there.
1 Skill Point and + to Skills from gear is enough for Thunder Storm to deal decent intermittent single target damage.
Telekinesis
Telekinesis is a Utility Skill that is primarily used for activating Waypoints, going through Town Portals, popping clickables, and picking up certain items from afar. It also knocks back enemies.
Telekinesis can be used to pick up Scrolls, Potions, Gold, and other consumable items from a distance. It cannot pick up standard equipment like Weapons, Body Armors, and Shields; it also cannot pick up Socketables like Runes, Jewels, or Gems.
In addition to being able to use Waypoints and Town Portals from afar, this Skill can also be used to enter Red Portals such as the Mephisto Red Portal to Pandemonium Fortress.
Using Telekinesis is the most efficient way to pop clickables (like chests) for loot. It is also the best way to pop seals in Chaos Sanctuary.
You can repeatedly cast Telekinesis to "perma-stun" a monster against a wall; this can allow your Mercenary to more easily kill a strong Lightning Immune monster.
Telekinesis CAN be used to deal Lightning Damage to enemies. However, it deals very little damage even if maxed and can only be applied to a single target.
Telekinesis uses the standard SorceressFaster Cast RateBreakpoints (105% and 200%).
Frozen Armor
Frozen Armor applies a Defense buff that scales based on its Level and the Defense stat on your gear. It also temporarily Freezes enemies that strike your Sorceress.
Frozen Armor only works against melee attacks. It does not work against ranged attacks.
1 Skill Point and + to Skills from gear is enough for Frozen Armor to do its job. However, you can choose to put additional Skill Points into Frozen Armor instead of Warmth past Level 94 for an increased Defense bonus.
Energy Shield
Energy Shield is a defensive buff that redirects a percentage of the Damage you take to your Mana Pool instead of your Life Pool. This percentage is based on the Skill's Level. This buff has an especially long duration, which increases with the Skill's Level. A golden sphere above your Sorceress' head indicates that this buff is active.
Allocating Skill Points into Telekinesis, Energy Shield's Synergy, increases Energy Shield's effectiveness by reducing the amount of Damage taken to your Mana Pool per point of Damage (i.e. With 0 Hard Points into Telekinesis you lose 2 Mana per 1 Point of Damage. With 20 Hard Points into Telekinesis you lose .75 Mana per 1 Point of Damage).
This Skill can be very hard on your Mana Pool. Keep at least 2 full rows of Mana Potions in your Belt while this Skill is active.
Energy Shield deactivates if you take damage at 0 Mana. For this reason, Energy Shield is more effective the higher your Mana Pool is. Refresh this buff ASAP to prevent your Life Pool from taking 100% of the damage like normal.
Energy Shield is most effective against guarding your Life from Physical Damage, but drains your Mana quickly versus Elemental Damage. Additionally, Energy Shield loses significant effectiveness when up against the Unique monster Mana Burn stat or the regular monster Drains Mana stat. In these situations, Energy Shield can even cause your Mana to drain so fast to the point that you cannot cast Teleport and can prove Deadly. Because the Mana Burn/Drains Mana monster stats exist, allocating all (or nearly all) your Stat Points into Energy and solely relying on high Level, high Mana percentage Energy Shield is especially risky.
Energy Shield does not work against Poison Damage. Poison Damage is always taken by your Life Pool.
Resistances do not apply to damage taken on Energy Shield.
Summary
Strategically use Lightning, Chain Lightning, Charged Bolt, and Static Field to maximize your damage output in different scenarios. Frequently reposition with Teleport to maximize coverage and avoid taking damage.
