Diablo 4 has 23 different Materials and 3 Currencies with many different uses. They are stored in a separate tab of your Inventory, so always pick them up. This overview covers everything we know about them so you can spend your riches wisely!

Plants
Every plant in Diablo 4 is used for crafting Potions, Elixirs, Incense and resource refining at the Alchemist. Some Side Quests reward Herb Caches that drops a number of these materials.
Gallowvine
Magic Crafting Material A herb used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Can appear nearly everywhere. Considered foundational to the study of alchemy, Gallowvine serves to bond and enhance other elixirs. |
Howler Moss
Magic Crafting Material A herb used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Found in Scosglen. A hoary mass with a pungent, musky aroma, prized by alchemists for its vital and physical qualities. |
Biteberry
Magic Crafting Material A herb used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Found in Fractured Peaks. A hard, bitter berry prized by alchemists for its use as both an enduring raisin and its vital and defensive qualities. |
Reddamine
Magic Crafting Material A fungus used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Found in Dry Steppes. A hoary mass with a pungent, musky aroma, prized by alchemists for its vital and physical qualities. |
Blightshade
Magic Crafting Material A herb used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Found in Hawezar. A toxic swamp lily, prized by alchemists for its foul and aggressive qualities. |
Lifesbane
Magic Crafting Material A herb used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Found in Kehjistan. A native Kehjistani berry with an eerie face, prized by alchemists for its potent toxins and soporific effects. |
Angelbreath
Rare Crafting Material A rare herb used in the crafting of potions, elixirs & incense. Can appear nearly everywhere. A precious and rare strain of lily-of-the-valley. Considered an alchemical catalyst of few peers. |
Fiend Rose
Rare Crafting Material An exceptionally hard to find herb. Found during the Helltide, when Sanctuary gives way to Hell's influence. Only mostly toxic in spite of its beauty, but still regarded a peerless catalyst by alchemists. |
Monster Parts
These materials drop from specific monster types and are used for various recipes at the Alchemist.
Demon's Heart
Magic Crafting Material Found in the bodies of demons. Each Demon still carries a withered, beating heart that propels it forward. Rarely they are left in fine enough condition after the Demon is slain to use for other means. |
Paletongue
Magic Crafting Material Found in the mouths of evil humans. The lies spouted by particularly black-hearted humans rarely manifest in turning their tongues a milky white. |
Grave Dust
Magic Crafting Material Found in the bodies, bones, or cerements of the undead. Long exposure to the walking dead imbues this dust with their inverse vitality, used in necromatic alchemies. |
Crushed Beast Bones
Magic Crafting Material Found by killing beasts and animals, as well as werecreatures. Within the bones of wild creatures dwells a raw potency used by alchemists to enhance physical properties. |
Ores
The ores of Diablo 4 are used to upgrade Jewelry at the Jeweler and Weapons at the Blacksmith to increase their power. Some Side Quests reward caches filled with ores that drops a number of these materials.
Iron Chunk
Crafting Material Metal used for improving weapons and jewelry. Found in veins nearly everywhere. A common, dark ore that while heavy results in clean, useful metal and used by artisans throughout Sanctuary. |
Silver Ore
Magic Crafting Material Rare metal used for improving weapons and jewelry. Found in veins nearly everywhere. Silver is prized by artisans for both its beauty and potency against dangerous creatures throughout Sanctuary. |
Scattered Prism
Rare Crafting Material A mysterious prism most often found in very, very large bodies, such as world bosses. Rare and hoarded by their previous owners, these prisms are often guarded jealously. |
Skins
Wildlife and beasts drop skins that are used to upgrade all armor pieces at the Blacksmith. Some Side Quests reward caches filled with hides that drops a number of these materials.
Iron Rawhide
Crafting Material Common leather used for improving armor. Can be obtained from the various wildlife and beasts. Coarse, rugged leather used for garments, tools, and toys for the hounds of Sanctuary. |
Superior Leather
Magic Crafting Material Rare leather used for improving armor. Can be obtained from the various wildlife and beasts. Supple, rugged leather used for fine garments and even finer armor. |
Salvage Material
These materials are created by salvaging items at the Blacksmith or Occultist. They are used to upgrading legendary armor (Blacksmith), weapons (Blacksmith), jewelry (Jeweler), re-roll item stats (Occultist), or create Sigils (Occultist).
Forgotten Soul
Legendary Crafting Material Found in ore veins erupting during the Helltide. Used to improve sacred and ancestral items. Is it a stone, an organ, or something else? Indescribably, it is all of these things. |
Abstruse Sigil
Legendary Crafting Material Salvaged from, and used to improve, legendary jewelry. Fragments from storied relics and talismans with truly unusual properties. |
Coiling Ward
Legendary Crafting Material Salvaged from, and used to improve, legendary armor. Fragments from storied armor with truly unusual properties. |
Baleful Fragment
Legendary Crafting Material Salvaged from, and used to improve, legendary weapons. Shards from storied weapons with truly unusual properties. |
Veiled Crystal
Rare Crafting Material Salvaged from rare weapons and armor, and used to alter the latent magic of things. Occultists and enchanters commonly use these crystals to reorient or redirect magical energy. The process renders them inert, so many are needed. |
Sigil Powder
Crafting Material Obtained by using the Occultist to salvage nightmare sigils of any tier. A mysterious powder that can be compressed into relics inviting peril for greater challenges and rewards. |
Currency
Currencies are listed at the bottom of your Inventory.

Gold
This Currency is found from monsters and chests across Sanctuary, or by selling items and legendary aspects. It is a very important resource that is used in almost everything:
- All gear related activities (buying, upgrading, etc.)
- All Crafting recipes
- Extracting and Applying Legendary Powers
- Removing Skill Points in the Skill Tree
- Trading
- Many more...

Obols
This Currency is obtained by completing Outside Events. You can gamble for gear at the Purveyor of Curiosities. This is a great source of Legendary Powers!

Red Dust
The Press preview had no additional information on how to obtain Red Dust and what we can do with it.

- Gallowvine is the most important resource early on. ALWAYS PICK IT UP!
- Materials have many uses and can be found all over Sanctuary as plants, ore veins or monster drops.
- Gold is used in almost everything in Diablo 4; collect as much as possible!
- Gambling with Obols is a great way to get Legendary Powers.
- Forgotten Souls and Fiend Roses can only be found in a Helltide.
- Scattered Prisms can only be found from World Bosses.
