How to Beat Scorpionlord
Last Updated:September 15, 2024|Change Log
When you first encounter the Scorpionlord, he's relaxing and drinking. You can run past the boss and continue on with your journey. If you do, Scorpionlord joins you as an ally when you first encounter The Duskveil at the end of the zone. However, if you do then you won't gain access to the Stained Jade Gourd which is one of the best! To fight him, simply smash the pots of booze to enrage him and start the fight! This is a very challenging encounter, one of the most difficult in Purple Cloud Mountain, if not all of Chapter 4.

Scorpionlord Move Set
The Scorpionlord is an extremely aggressive and challenging foe. He alternates between rapidly striking with his claws, or using his tail to inflict lethal poisons. It is difficult to find a spare moment to heal, never mind using additional medicines, like Anti-Miasma Powder so you may end up having to tank the poison DoT for a bit while you dodge. The Non-Void Spirit is particularly useful here as he gives you a backstep to get out of danger.
- When Scorpionlord's claw glows yellow he is about to use it to attack you.
- From time to time he does a "Clash" attack when striking with his claw, this looks epic but results in you losing health, be mindful of this and keep your health topped off.
- On the other hand, when his tail glows green he is about to use that instead.
- NOTE: Sometimes he chains his tail moves together making them even more difficult to follow and avoid.
- Sometimes he uses a combo that combines both Claw and Tail attacks, watch his body closely to see what glows so you know what he's doing next in the sequence.
- Your Heavy Attack is an effective tool for disrupting his combos. Despite his aggression it pays to stay close to the boss during most of his moves, this allows you to deal damage after timing your dodges to avoid damage.
Tain and Claw Combo
- Sometimes Scorpionlord uses a combo attack where he alternates between using his Tail and Claw while repeatedly striking at the Destined One.
- Time your dodges to avoid damage, he ends the sequence by jamming his claw into the ground. It gets stuck for a moment making this a perfect time to punish the boss!
Aerial Tail Slam
- This looks similar to his Tail Combo but for this technique, he jumps into the air before slamming his tail down several times. While each of these attacks has significant range, they're easy to avoid by dodging left or right as he attacks.
Tailspin
- After his tail glows, Scorpionlord does a sequence of 3 sweeping attacks while spinning along the ground. To avoid this at close range you need to time your dodges precisely to avoid damage. Alternatively, use non-void to get away from the boss. There's a good bit of movement on this attack so even if you backstep the initial strike be prepared to dodge later attacks in the sequence.
Tail Strike
- This move is very similar to the aerial tail slam, except this time instead of jumping into the air, Scorpionlord crouches down, his tail glows then he executes a vicious strike while splashing poison everywhere. Dodge left or right then get away because the poison puddles explode after the boss withdraws his tail.
Tail Combo
- Scorpionlord combines the strikes and sweeps with his tail. This sequence is particularly challenging to avoid as you need to carefully time your dodges. Unfortunately, this attack looks very similar to the Tailspin / Tail Strike, you can dodge left or right to avoid the strikes in the sequence but you need good timing or more distance for the sweeps.
Claw Rush
- The boss rushes toward you as his claw glows, ending the attack with an uppercut.
- This is difficult to avoid due to the size of the boss and the attack's momentum, you can dodge left or right at close range or use Non-Void to build distance then dodge again to avoid the uppercut.
- If you dodge forward you usually get stuck on the boss and take significant damage.
Claw Flurry
- Scorpionlord's claw glows and then he unleashes a rapid flurry of blows. It's difficult to avoid this attack in its entirety by timing your dodges, you can use Non-Void to build distance or Cloud Step to get the boss to focus on your decoy.
Dig Attack
- Scorpionlord dives into the ground.
- A few moments later he re-emerges to attack the Destined One, time your dodge to avoid damage. Alternatively, drop a Cloud Step decoy and charge a Heavy Attack to get some damage in on the boss.
Poison Bomb
- When Scorpionlord embeds his tail into the ground he's about to use his poison bomb attack. Get out of the puddles that form and get away from the boss and all the puddles. After a short delay they explode, this has a larger radius than the puddles so don't run back in before they explode!
