You need to complete the Elder Jinchi questline, to obtain the Fireproof Mantle, a powerful tool for countering Scorch damage which is highly effective against Black Bear Guai. This secret quest takes place in Chapter 1 and requires you to ring 3 bells. There are several mini-bosses you defeat along the way but the real challenge is the boss at the end.

Learn more about the other Vessels available in Black Myth Wukong with our Vessel Guide.

Preparation

  • You need to defeat the Whiteclad Noble to access the third bell, but you can complete the first 2 bells before this.
    • Check out our dedicated boss guide for help in defeating the Whiteclad Noble.
  • Elder Jinchi himself has a move set very similar to the Wandering Wight, so familiarizing yourself with that fight can make this one easier.

The First Bell

You find the First Bell after defeating Guangzhi in the Forest of Wolves. Start from the Outside the Forest Shrine, ahead of you are two Yaoguai guarding a fork in the road, defeat them then follow the instructions below to locate the shrine and the boss.

Follow the path defeating any Yaoguai you encounter until you reach the bridge with a treasure chest on the left.
  • Follow the path defeating any Yaoguai you encounter until you reach the bridge with a treasure chest on the left.
  • Turn left again, and continue following the path along the ridge.
  • At the next fork, turn right and continue towards the waterfall.
  • Enter the water before the waterfall and continue along it until you reach the path again.
  • Continue along the path until it forks again, take a left. This is where you find a clearing with the First Bell guarded by Guangzhi.

Guangzhi Tips

Guangzhi guards the First Bell
  • Guangzhi has a lot of flashy sweeping attacks. His strikes inflict Scorch which can cause you to catch fire, if you do you can dodge consecutively to quell the flames. Most of his attacks don't hit very hard individually but he tends to use a sequence of several attacks at once so use your Gourd and Immobilize liberally to keep yourself healthy and set up for some damage.
  • Watch out for when he leaps into the air or plants his weapon in the ground as these signal that he's about to use his strongest attacks.
  • Remember to ring the bell after defeating the miniboss!

Transformation Spell

After you defeat Guangzhi, you get your first Transformation Spell, take his form for a duration, ignite your weapon, and strike your foes. Having a Transformation is especially helpful against bosses like Elder Jinchi because it provides a second health bar, if you die while transformed you simply revert to your normal form.

The Second Bell

You find the Second Bell after defeating Goangmou in the Bamboo Grove. Start from the Snake Trail Shrine, head up the stairs, and continue following the path across the bridge.

Defeat the Snake Guai, or run past and continue following the path down the river, until you reach a large bamboo grove.
  • Defeat the Snake Guai, or run past and continue following the path down the river, until you reach a large bamboo grove.
  • Proceed through the center of the grove defeating enemies or running past them.
  • When you reach the two statues, pass through and prepare to face Guangmou.

Guangmou Tips

Guangmou guards the Second Bell
  • Guangmou uses a lot of projectiles and poison making him annoying to fight. Some of his projectiles have homing so you need to dodge them even if they look like they might miss.
  • During his most dangerous attack, he summons several snakes who then spit poison at you. Focus on dodging and spend some time killing the snakes if you're struggling to avoid their projectiles.
  • After defeating Guangmou you can capture him as a Spirit where he summons snakes to attack your enemies.

Ringing the Bell

Take the path to the left up the stairs.
Take the path to the left up the stairs.
  • Take the path to the left up the stairs.
  • When you reach the top, ring the Second Bell, this puts you one step closer to Elder Jinchi.

The Third Bell

To access the Third Bell, you need to defeat the Whiteclad Noble in the Marsh of White Mist. After beating the boss, head to the left down the misty path. The Third Bell is at the end of this path, guarded by some low level Yaoguai. Defeat them, then ring the bell to be transported to Elder Jinchi's area.

Take a left then follow the path

Elder Jinchi

Enter the past version of Guanyin Temple and do battle with Elder Jinchi, a large Wight. His attacks are more on the methodical side and less spammy in comparison to many smaller faster bosses, but they hit hard. His attack patterns are very similar to the Wandering Wight, so if you comfortably defeated that boss you can apply that knowledge here. He is surrounded by zombie minions, they don't do much on their own but are sometimes used as part of the boss's mechanics.

Pro Tip: You can kill the minions to heal yourself, do this to keep your health high throughout the encounter!

Defeat him to obtain the Fireproof Mantle

Boss Moves and Tips

  • Elder Jinchi uses a series of basic punches, stomps, claps, headbutts, and spin attacks. These deal moderate damage and he likes to chain them together. Watch the timing and dodge or build distance to give yourself a bit of breathing room. If you move too far away he is more likely to use long range attacks so be careful about traveling too far.
  • Occasionally he raises his hands into the air and commands all of his minions to attack, you need to sprint to avoid the exploding minions or jump into your Transformation to give yourself protection, if you are hit by one of the minions you are likely to get hit by several and take significant damage.
  • Sometimes Elder Jinchi draws in energy and unleashes a burst of golden light, this does heavy damage. When you see him strike a pose and his hand begins to glow prepare to dodge, then when he moves to unleash the attack, dodge to avoid damage.
  • One of Elder Jinchi's most lethal moves is his aftershock attack. He slams his hand into the ground and begins channeling golden energy which shatters the earth. There's a fast variant which is easy to avoid due to the small AoE, and the full variant. When he uses the full variant the shockwave explodes 3 times, followed by an aftershock explosion when he removes his hand. To counter this mechanic, run far away from the boss until after he removes his hand from the ground. Watch out for an energy burst follow-up as he is more likely to use that when you are at range.
  • At 50% health, Elder Jinchi does his intermission. After the intermission, he returns to attacking the Destined One.

Intermission

Run around killing minions to keep the boss from healing.
  • During this phase, Elder Jinchi becomes invulnerable and begins chanting. As he does the zombies attempt to reach him and perform a ritual. If they succeed, the boss heals. Run around the room killing all of the zombies to complete this phase.

Key Items

Defeating Elder Jinchi gets you the Fireproof Mantle, an item that gives you much needed defenses against Scorch and fire damage. This item is particularly effective against Black Bear Guai and trivializes his transition mechanic. Interact with the corpse of the Wolf Guai hanging from the nearby tree after exiting the past to obtain the Fireproof Mantle.
