Traits in Throne and Liberty are placed onto your weapon, armor, and accessories to grant extra stats. Depending on your choice, they can be offensive, defensive, or utility. You can only fit up to 3 on any weapon or armor, but don't fret; it's usually straightforward.

There are plenty of Traits that can be rolled on weapons and armor, and many of them are not worth mentioning. To see which ones a piece of gear can have, click the item and then the Trait List button. There, you see the chances of which ones are rolled when the item is crafted or dropped.

Click the icon next to the trait to search for a particular trait on the Auction House.

Applying New Trait Lines

There are two methods to add a new Trait line.

  • Have the same piece of gear or an extract version of that gear but with a different Trait, then add it to your existing gear.

In your Equipment Enchanting window, go to the 3rd tab titled "Trait." Pick the piece to which you want to add a new line, and for some Sollant, voilà, you now have another line.

  • Use Trait Unlockstone.

Further into the game, you can unlock new lines using Trait Unlockstones, which you can get from Lithograph Book completion, Mystic Portals, and Common Trait Unlockstone Bundle.

Upgrading Trait Lines

Having a BiS Trait line is a great feeling. What could be an even better feeling? Getting even higher stats out of that line. Blue Gear have three tiers or "upgrades" on its lines, and Purple Gear have four.

How do you upgrade your line, then?

First, you need the same Trait on a piece of gear that fits in the same equipment slot.

So if you're trying to upgrade the Melee Evasion line on Impure Witch's Linen Pants, you can use any other Leg piece or extract Leg piece like Extract: Elite Resistance Linen Pants to upgrade that line.

RNG and Chance

Upgrading a Trait line of a piece of gear with another of the same rarity always results in a 100% upgrade chance. But what about if you use a piece of gear with the same trait but a lower rarity?

For example, you want to upgrade a line on Impure Witch's Linen Pants with Marksman's Leather Pants.

In cases where the sacrificial piece is 1 Tier below, you would only have a base success rate of 10%. This only works if it's 1 Tier lower in rarity at most. Depending on the state of the Auction House on your server, you might find this a cheaper option.

Blessings

Upgrading Trait lines by sacrificing lower-tier gear can be efficient and is a well-known method.

  • When sacrificing a piece of gear 1 Tier lower, you have a base 10% chance of success.
  • When sacrificing a gear 2 Tiers lower, you have a base 1% chance of success.

Each time you fail, you gain Blessings, which are basically Fail Stacks. You can then use all your accumulated Blessings to increase the chance of success when using a lower-tier gear.

Extracting Trait Lines

Okay, you have an untradeable piece of gear that you don't want to use. You can't sell it at the Auction House either. What should you do?

Well, you can extract the trait and list it for sale instead! At any Sundries Merchant, you can buy up to 420 Trait Extraction Stone at the Contract Coin Merchant.

Click the item, and on the right side, you will see the Trait Extraction button. The rarity of your equipment will determine how many Trait Extraction Stones are used.

Making a Lithograph

What if you have a highly coveted gear piece but with a Trait that is trash?

What you can do is turn it into a Lithograph by using Precious Blank Lithograph: Weapons, Precious Blank Lithograph: Armor, or Precious Blank Lithograph: Accessories or the Rare versions. You can then sell it at the Auction House.

Replacing Trait Lines

Oh man, let's say you got 3 Trait lines now. But you don't like one of them and want to replace it with a better one.

To do that, you need Trait Conversion Stones.

In the Traits tab of your Equipment Enchanting window, click a line, and you will see two buttons: Convert Trait Selection and Trait Conversion.

  1. Trait Selection (shown on the right) allows you to choose which Trait to switch into using Trait Unlockstone and Trait Conversion Stone
Replacing Traits
  1. Trait Conversion requires an identical piece of gear or extract version with a different trait and Trait Conversion Stones.

Ex. I want to convert the Wildling Bonus Damage trait on my Toublek's Thunderous Soul to Cooldown Speed.

I need a Toublek's Thunderous Soul or Extract: Toublek's Thunderous Soul with Cooldown Speed to use Trait Conversion Stones.

Alternatively, the 2nd option allows you to gamble a new trait without requiring an existing piece of gear. I don't recommend this option.

You buy Trait Conversion Stones from the Guild Merchant. You can buy up to 100 every week. You can also earn them by using Mystic Keys and participating in Inter-Server Wars.

Trait Resonance

Once your piece of gear is fully traited, you have the option of giving it a Resonance Trait. There are two methods of giving an item a Resonance Trait.

  1. Random Resonance Trait Roll (Percentages displayed above)
  2. Select Resonance Trait

The difference between these two methods is in the cost to Trait. Both methods require Trait Resonance Stone. But selecting a specific Resonance Trait you want instead of going for a random roll will cost you 20x more Trait Resonance Stone.

To craft Trait Resonance Stone, you need Trait Resonance Stone Fragment, which you acquire from using Substance Transformation.

Summary

  • Traits are an essential part of player progression, offering amazing stats like Heavy Attack Chance and Skill Damage Boost.
  • To apply new lines, you need an identical piece of gear with a different trait or use Trait Unlockstones.
  • To upgrade existing lines, you must sacrifice a piece of gear of the same equipment slot with the same trait.
  • Using Blessings, you can make upgrading lines cheap and easy.
  • You can extract Traits from gear to sell using Trait Extraction Stone.
  • You can replace Traits from gear using Trait Conversion Stones.
