Gear Corrosion Guide
Last Updated:November 9, 2024|Changelog
Corrosion in Torchlight Infinite is a way to get a bit of extra power out of your items. However, with great power comes great consequences and in this case, a failed Corrosion binds the item to your account! Corrosion renders an item uncraftable so be sure to do any Crafting before you Corrode it (you can apply Dream Interpretation after). Collect some materials from Dark Surge and Clockwork Ballet before heading over to Zenoth the Lightless to begin Corroding your gear!
Corrosion
Collect Aemberon Cores from the Dark Surge mechanic to use the Darkness Corrosion on Legendary items. For non-Legendary items you need Corrupted Axes from Clockwork Ballet. The amount of each Currency you need depends on the item level of the gear you wish to Corrode.
There are 4 outcomes for Darkness Corrosion:
- Mutation (25%)
- Replaces Base Affixes with a Corrosion-only Aember Base Affix.
- Binds the item to your account.
- Chaos (25%)
- Rerolls the affix values on an item as if a Truth Ember was used.
- Binds the item to your account.
- Arrogance (30%)
- Elevates 1 Affix on the item.
- The maximum is T0 on Legendary items and T0+ on non-Legendary items.
- This is a "win" state as it does not bind the result to your account!
- Void (20%)
- Puts the item into the Corroded state without changing it further.
- Binds the item to your account.
Hitting Chaos, or Void is automatically a brick, leaving your item in a worse state than before. A lot of the time Mutation is a brick as well, since it wipes out your powerful Base Affixes and binds the item to your account. So most of the time when you're Corroding something you want to hit Arrogance. In short, when you Corrode something you have about a 70% chance to brick it and a 30% chance to make something amazing.
Darkest Corrosion
Collect the Familiar Nexus by defeating Keegan the Tidemaster to use the Darkness Corrosion on Legendary items. For non-Legendary items, you need the Glorious Axis from Clockwork Ballet. You only need 1 of these powerful and expensive Corrosion materials per attempt!
There are 5 outcomes for Darkest Corrosion:
- Mutation (30%)
- Replaces ALL Base Affixes with a Corrosion-only Aember Base Affix.
- Binds the item to your account.
- Chaos (30%)
- Rerolls the affix values on an item as if a Truth Ember was used.
- Binds the item to your account.
- Arrogance (15%)
- Elevates 1 Affix.
- The maximum is T0 on Legendary items and T0+ on non-Legendary items.
- This is a "win" state as it does not bind the result to your account.
- Desecration (15%)
- Elevates 2 Affixes.
- The maximum is T0 on Legendary items and T0+ on non-Legendary items.
- This is a "win" state as it does not bind the result to your account!
- Void (10%)
- Puts the item into the Corroded state without changing it further.
- Binds the item to your account.
Hitting Chaos, or Void is automatically a brick, leaving your item in a worse state than before. A lot of the time Mutation is a brick as well, since it wipes out your powerful Base Affixes and binds the item to your account. Because of the material cost for Darkest Corrosion, you want to hit Desecration to maximize your return, but Arrogance can yield a favorable outcome as well.
Therefore you have a 70% chance to brick the item outright, a 15% chance for a potentially usable outcome, and a 15% chance for the ideal outcome. But remember just because you hit Desecration, this doesn't mean you elevate the ideal affixes, so Corrosion gets very expensive as you attempt to min-max.
Corrosion Example
Here's an example of Darkest Corrosion selecting Desecration, upgrading 2 Affixes. The T0 +2 Active Skill Level is elevated to T0+ which gives +3 Active Skill Level and the T1 Life upgraded to T0 resulting in 265 Max Life. When it succeeds, Corrosion makes your items far more powerful. But it's not without a significant risk, "failed" Corrosions can put an item in a worse state than when you started while preventing you from fixing it via crafting or reselling it to get funds and try again. This is the epitome of a high risk, high reward way to finish your items!
