Citadels drop Ancient Crisis Fragments, Faded Crisis Fragments, Weathered Crisis Fragments, Maps and Currency.
This guide assumes you know the basics of farming currency. Click here for a refresher.
Requirements
- Citadels require you to be able to take down Tier 15 Waystone Bosses. Running 6 Suffix Modifier Corrupted Waystones significantly increase profits but also increase the difficulty of the fight massively. Start with easier Waystones first until you acquire enough money from them to run more profitable ones. Alternatively, find someone to carry your kills when you reveal a Citadel on your Atlas. If it's not a favour from a friend do not agree to split the loot but pay them a flat fee instead.
- It requires you to progress to Tier 15 Waystones as they are needed to run the Citadel. If you are not there yet you can still employ the discovery strategies explained further down and "save" the Citadels up until you can run them for a massive boost in income.
- Optional: A sizeable amount of Atlas Passive Points in order to further boost you chances to gain additional Fragments by scaling Waystone Modifier Effect and Waystone Drop Chance Bonus.
Mechanics
When combined, Ancient Crisis Fragments, Faded Crisis Fragments, Weathered Crisis Fragments allow access to the Arbiter of Ash fight in the Burning Monolith. As the Arbiter's items are desired, the Fragments to enter the fight are sought after. Acquire the fragments by beating the Bosses residing in Citadels you discover as you travel through your Atlas.

Now that it's clear what to look for and how to spot each Citadel it's time to improve your odds to find them. There are 3 things that result in farming more Citadels per hour:
- Reveal as much new area as possible per map you run
- Generate as many new tilesets as possible by not lingering in the same area for too long.
- Towers are excellent at revealing large areas of your Atlas
- Similar to Strip Mining in Minecraft try to pick a direction and somewhat stick with it
- Follow Coastlines when they reveal a sufficient area
- Citadels seem to have higher spawn rates when adjacent to Water. (Unconfirmed)
- Do not backtrack or follow a coastline that does not grant a lot of new information
- This also grants you more Nameless Seer and Untainted Paradise maps as they generate on coasts
- Look for the small buildings that surround the Citadels at the edge of the fog
- Do not spend too much time trying to find the tiniest hint of a building and run more maps instead
Increase your Citadel Loot
After you find a Citadel you may either take note of it and continue revealing more of them or run it right away. Crisis Fragment Drop Quantity is increased by your Waystones Waystone Drop Chance. This means at roughly 300 to 400% increased Waystone Drop Chance you begin dropping 2 Fragments instead of just 1. At 900%+ 3 may drop, with a chance for 4. The exact breakpoints are still being tested but will be updated here as soon as they're available. Increase your Waystone Drop Chance to double or triple your profits with these tricks:
- Roll your Waystone properly. Only Suffix modifiers affect Fragment Drop Quantity.
- Acquire 6 Suffix Waystones by using a Vaal Orb on 6 mod Waystones as one corruption outcome is converting all your mods into suffixes.
- Alternatively, buy 6 suffix Waystones from other players through the Trade Site
- Be Careful: 6 Suffix maps can be VERY difficult. Only run these when your Build can handle them!
- Amplify your mods with a specialized Atlas Passive Tree Setup.
- Only worth doing when aiming for 3+ Fragments or when clearing a lot of Citadels in a row.
- Pick up every node that grants Explicit Modifier Effect and Waystone Quantity
- Spec back into your primary farming strategy Atlas Tree after you complete your Citadels.
- Beware: Certain modifiers are dangerous when scaled by increased effect. For example the mod "Players have 60% less Recovery Rate of Life and Energy Shield" is generally manageable. Increasing its effect can cause it to turn into 100% less, effectively disabling any recovery.
Atlas Passive Tree
ONLY RUN THE SECOND PAGE DURING YOUR CITADEL KILLS WHEN AIMING FOR 3+ FRAGMENTS, USE YOUR REGULAR ATLAS OTHERWISE. READ ABOVE.
