Act 3 Campaign Secrets Guide
Last Updated:December 20, 2024|Changelog
Act 3 of Path of Exile 2's campaign contains many hidden encounters, loot caches and treasure stashes. Many of these explorable secrets in the ruins of the Vaal empire contain guaranteed rewards like Uncut Skill Gems, Uncut Support Gems, specific rare gear, Currency and Gold. You can claim several major permanent character buffs, such as Passive skill points and a major increase to your Spirit stat! This guide shows you where to find each of these hidden secrets scattered around the Act 3 map — and which of them are worth finding.
Path of Exile 2 is currently in early access, this means rapid development including iteration on the campaign. Be sure to pin this page to be notified of any updates to the guide.
There are many hidden encounters and permanent buffs to discover in the previous Acts! Make sure to check out the Act 1 Guide and the Act 2 Guide!
Finding Encounters on the World Map
Many hidden encounters can be located on Path of Exile 2's Act 3 world map through icons that appear after you explore the zone. The symbols with a + symbol represent important encounters that give permanent character buffs.
The markers without + symbols point out some of the other loot locations and special encounters — but not all of them. This guide details the marked and unmarked secrets that give loot such as Gold, Uncut Gems, crafting Currency and gear.
Checkpoints also appear near many of the hidden encounters, which is a good way to spot them. Look around Checkpoints for anything unusual looking and use the reference images and descriptions in this guide to aid in your search.
From this point onwards there are spoilers for many things in the campaign — bosses, zones, secrets and easter eggs. Proceed with caution!
Act 3 Secrets Quick Guide
Within the spoilers is a quick list of the hidden loot, permanent buffs and secret encounters in Path of Exile 2's Act 3. Consult the detailed information in this guide for more information on each secret in the list. The list is color-coded to help you distinguish reward and encounter types:
- Zone Name
- Encounter Name or Description: Randomized Loot / Guaranteed Drop / Permanent Unlock or Buff (Difficulty Mode: Normal / Cruel)
Note: Unless otherwise stated, you can only claim guaranteed drops only once, even if you repeat the event. Most guaranteed drops are available in both Normal and Cruel but the specific reward often changes.
ACT 3 EXPLORATION QUICK GUIDE
Guaranteed item drops from the special encounters in this guide are obtainable by each player in the party, provided they have not claimed that reward previously in that difficulty. You can even open a chest that drops a guaranteed Magic Amulet, for example, and then invite your friend to your party. When they enter the zone with you the opened chest also creates a Magic Amulet for them! These drops are only able to be picked up by the party member they were created for, but they are still tradeable as usual.
Sandswept Marsh
The first zone of Act 3, the Sandswept Marsh, is home to several special encounters: Rootdredge, the Hanging Tree, and the Orok Campfire. The zone is roughly divided into two areas: a sandy marshland which contains the Hanging Tree and Rootdredge, and an area with trees that contains the zone exit and the Orok Campfire.
Rootdredge: Uncut Skill Gem
Rootdredge is a Unique Boss in the Sadswept Marsh — a necromantic Treant that summons zombies and hurls enchanted corpses at you. Defeating this boss grants a Level 9 Uncut Skill Gem in Normal and random loot in Cruel.
The Hanging Tree: Random Ring
Nearby is also the Hanging Tree, which features one of the least threatening ambushes of all time. When you disturb a nearby corpse some of zombies slowly shamble out of waters. Ensure your controller or mouse and keyboard are plugged in and you'll be able to defeat them easily — I believe in you. For your efforts you can claim a random Ring from the corpse.
Orok Campsite: Lesser Jeweller's Orb
In the more vegetated area of the Sandswept Marsh is the Orok Campsite. This location features a pair unique Rare Monsters named Ranbu the Pale Shaman and Garkam, Ranbu's Maul. Garkam's slow attacks are easy to dodge but be cautious of Poison ground left behind by Ranbu's attacks. Pay attention to the rare monster modifiers, which is always a good idea with these unique Rare Monster fights.
Upon defeating Garkam and Ranbu at the Orok Campsite you can open the nearby Basket to obtain a crucially important reward — a Lesser Jeweller's Orb. This allows you to add a support gem socket to one of your skills. You can obtain a guaranteed Lesser Jeweller's Orb once in Normal and once in Cruel Difficulty. Choose which skills to apply these two Jeweller's Orbs to carefully as these can be rare to find randomly until endgame.
Jungle Ruins and Venom Crypt
The Jungle Ruins is the first zone after the Ziggurat Encampment and it contains exits to multiple other important zones as well as several important hidden encounters. A secret NPC vendor, a huge gorilla with skill points, a lost friend and the entrance to the underground Venom Crypts. In total two permanent character buffs are available here as well as some extremely strong gearing potential.
Silverfist: +2 Passives and Likely Death
Silverfist is a massive and fast Unique Boss that does not mess around. Find yourself not paying attention in the ruins they claim as their territory and this monstrous Quadrillo can quickly flatten you like a pancake. Hardcore permadeath warning!
Most of Silverfist's lethality is in the overhead slam with the ruin's pillar. If you don't have a large amount of physical mitigation and life this is a one-shot attack. It is an incredible opportunity to practice your dodge rolling skill though — wait to the last moment and time those rolls to the side carefully.
Defeat Silverfist and you are rewarded with +2 Passive / Weapon Swap Skill Points in both Normal and Cruel Difficulties!
Jungle Ruins Troubled Camp: Secret Vendor Gwendolyn Albright and Rare Gloves
In the Troubled Camp inside of the Jungle Ruins zone is an NPC named Gwendolyn Albright, with several chests nearby. Most chests contain random loot but one of these contains a guaranteed pair of Rare Gloves.
Gwendolyn Albright is one of the game's hidden vendors — shopkeepers who sell better-than-normal gear. Gwendolyn sells Armour that are always at least Magic or Rare, with their item level based on the zone (level 34 in Normal and level 58 in Cruel).
Her wares reset each time you level up, so if you are struggling to find some movement speed boots or a good body armor / helmet / pair of gloves then visit Gwendolyn each time you gain a new level. This is a fantastic tool for gearing up. It's especially helpful in the final push into endgame in Cruel difficulty where the level 58 gear she sells can be good enough to beat the campaign and get started on endgame maps.
The Jungle Grave: A Choice of Rare Belts
In Act 3's Jungle Ruins a side quest for the NPC Servi sees you explore area for a missing member of their community. Once you locate the Jungle Grave you must summon Servi to reveal the missing person's unfortunate fate. Upon doing so you are rewarded with your choice of Rare Belts from Servi for your efforts. In Normal difficulty your options are an unidentified Rare Linen Belt or Rawhide Belt. In Cruel difficulty your options are instead a Rare Mail Belt or Double Belt.
While not exactly a hidden encounter, The Jungle Grave is a non-dangerous and straightforward optional quest to get some important gear — and that's what this guide is all about. Good Belts can give you much-needed Life, Resistances, Charm slots and flask effectiveness scaling.
The Venom Crypts: Permanent Character Buffs and Random Loot
Near the Waypoint in the Jungle Ruins is the entrance to The Venom Crypts. This zone is a snake-filled crypt with many Sarcophagi with randomized loot, though be wary that some contain snake-filled corpses that attack when you draw near. The area marked on the minimap (but not on the world map) as The Priesthood Crypt contains Magic Monsters and several Sarcophagi with random loot.
The amount of Sarcophagi along with a high density of Magic and Rare monsters make this a decent early Act 3 farming location. Clear it to obtain loot and check Gwendolyn's wares again each time you level up to improve your gear as needed.
Your primary objective in the Venom Crypts is to obtain a quest item: the Corpse-snake Venom. The venom is located on a corpse in the area marked as The Den of the Serpent Priestess. Turn it in to the NPC Servi in town to get a choice of one Venom Draught. Each difficulty has different buff options to choose between and the choice is permanent, so choose carefully.
Here are your Venom Draught options in Act 3 Normal:
- 25% increased Stun Threshold.
- 30% increased Elemental Ailment Threshold.
- 25% increased Mana Regeneration Rate.
Here are your Venom Draught options in Act 3 Cruel:
- +10% to Chaos Resistance.
- +5 to All Attributes.
- 15% reduced Slowing Potency of Debuffs on you.
Remember: you cannot change your decision later. They are all reasonable options on most builds, but Chaos Resistance stands out in Cruel as a high value effect that is difficult to get enough of. Attributes are a better choice for builds that plan on using skills from other archetypes — such as a Warrior using an Intelligence-based spell. Consider the long-term goals of your build too. If you take Chaos Inoculation you wont benefit from the Chaos Resistance!
Infested Barrens
The Infested Barrens is a large insect-ravaged zone that acts as a gateway branching point to many other areas of Act 3. Within it are two hidden encounters: the Larva Hollow and the secret NPC vendor Sebastian Carroway.
The Larva Hollow is the source of at least some of the insect problem in the Infested Barrens. It is an unmarked hidden area: a sunken nest of the unique Rare Monster The Brood Queen and her many, many Larva.
Step inside and be swarmed by the Larva — easily dealt with by using an area of effect skill. Further in the hollow the Brood Queen awaits, buried underground. Whilst the Larva Hollow is an interesting encounter it only rewards random loot from the monsters you kill within.
Infested Barrens Troubled Camp: Secret Vendor Sebastian Carroway and Rare Boots
In the Troubled Camp in the Infested Barrens there are several chests and the NPC Sebastian Carroway. One of the chests contains a guaranteed pair of Rare Boots. Any opportunity to get faster Movement Speed Boots must be taken advantage of as one of the most important stats in any build. So ensure you check these boots.
Sebastian Carroway is much like Gwendolyn in the Jungle Ruins — a hidden NPC Vendor that sells better-than-normal gear. Sebastian specifically sells weapons, including ranged and melee (but not spell caster weapons like Wands, see the Apex of Filth later in this guide). Getting a high damage weapon for any attack build is a tremendous boon, so check to see what he has in stock. Just like Gwendolyn, he resets his wares every time you level up. The weapons in his shop are based on the zone level: 35 in Normal and 59 in Cruel Difficulty.
The Azak Bog
Attached to the Infested Barrens is the Azak Bog. This zone is home to the Unique Boss: Ignaduk, the Bog Witch. While not a hidden boss, Ignaduk is part of the side quest Tribal Vengeance. Most importantly, slaying her grants you with extremely important permanent character buffs: +30 Spirit in Normal and +40 Spirit in Cruel.
Additionally, Ignaduk drops a guaranteed Uncut Spirit Gem when you kill her for the first time in each difficulty. This is not a boss fight you want to miss. Ignaduk can be quite challenging, so check out the Act 3 Boss Guide for more tips. Pay attention, in particular, to the Flameskin Ritual hidden event in the Azak Bog. Complete the ritual by lighting each of the fires to be granted a temporary buff to Fire Resistance and Item Rarity. These make the Ignaduk fight easier and more rewarding.
Chimeral Wetlands
In the verdant Chimeral Wetlands you find the entrance of Act 3's Ascendancy Trial, the Trial of Chaos. You also obtain the key to access that Trial by fighting Xyclucian, the Chimera. To top it off there are also two opportunities to grab some extra loot from the hidden encounters the Ravaged Camp and the Toxic Bloom.
Xyclucian, the Chimera: Access to the Trial of Chaos
The Unique Boss Xyclucian, the Chimera is located deep in the Chimeral Wetlands. This boss fight is a spectacular duel with a fire, cold and lightning-breathing monstrosity that also shoots poison from it's tail. And it can fly. So check out the Act 3 Boss guide for tips on how to deal with that! When defeated, Xyclucian drops the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum, which grants access to the Trial of Chaos. Check out our Ascendancy Trials guide to learn how to get your second set of Ascendancy points in the Trial of Chaos.
Toxic Bloom: A Magic Amulet
In the Chimeral Wetlands zone an are a filled with poisonous flowers is home to a unique Rare Monster named the Noxious Behemoth. In both Normal and Cruel Difficulty the Noxious Behemoth drops a guaranteed Magic Amulet for all party members when defeated.
Amulets are quite rare drops during the campaign, making this a good opportunity to get an upgrade. Identify your Magic Amulet and if it has the potential to be an upgrade over your current Amulet (or if it simply has Life, Attributes, Damage or Resistance on it) then use a Regal Orb on it to turn it into a Rare.
The Ravaged Camp: Random Loot and Guaranteed Armour
Unlike the campsites of Gwendolyn Albright and Sebastian Carroway this campsite has not survived the dangers of Act 3's Chimeral Wetlands. The Ravaged Camp features several chests with randomized loot and a guaranteed Rare Armour for each player in the party in both Normal and Cruel difficulties.
Jiquani's Machinarium and Sanctum
Jiquani's Machinarium Unmarked Treasure Vaults
Inside Jiquani's Machinarium are treasure vaults that must be opened by powering the door with one of the Small Soul Cores scattered about the zone. Once the door is powered, loot the Gold and Chests, which have random loot inside. These vaults are not marked on the map and while you can farm them by resetting the zone they are time-consuming to open.
Blackjaw: Permanent +10% Fire Resistance
Blackjaw is a hidden Unique Boss in Jiquani's Machinarium. The boss fight is hidden behind a sealed door that must be opened with a Small Soul Core. The statuesque lizard deals a mixture of Fire and Physical damage and can be quite challenging. Hide behind the pillars to avoid some of the fire damage, particularly the flamethrower. Kill Blackjaw and you are rewarded with a permanent +10% Fire Resistance buff. You can claim this reward in Normal and Cruel difficulties for a total of +20% Fire Resistance.
Jiquani's Sanctum: Corruption Altar
Tucked away behind the entrance in Jiquani's Sanctum is a device called Paquate's Mechanism. This is a Corruption Altar, which allows you to Corrupt an item. This works the same as using a Vaal Orb on an item, which modify items unpredictably in positive or potentially negative ways. The possible upsides of corruption can be very powerful though, so it is worth using this device in a few potential ways:
- Corrupt a good, but not irreplaceable, rare piece of gear. This has a chance to give an additional socket or add a modifier to the item. Otherwise, it may reroll some of the affixes on the item, which can be good or bad depending on what you end up with!
- Corrupt a 3-socket Skill Gem you are using for a potential 4th socket. Other possibilities are -1 sockets, increased quality or the Gem gaining or losing a level. If the corruption fails you must replace the gem. Thankfully, low-level skill gems are easy to replace and Lesser Jeweller's Orb are cheap on the Currency Exchange.
You can use the Corruption Altar once in each Difficulty.
The Matlan Waterways
Narag's Hut: Rare Weapon
In the Matlan Waterways, you can raid Narag's Hut and fight the unique Rare Monster Narag of the Vile Word. The entrance to Narag's Hut is roughly halfway through the zone and down a jungle path with skulls hanging from an arch (and a checkpoint).
Narag casts fire spells, including a meteor with a long cast time. When you defeat her each member of the party is rewarded with a Rare Weapon and some random loot.
Drowned City
As you progress through The Drowned City be wary of an ambush of Crawlers in a chokepoint after a bridge with a checkpoint. As you proceed through the zone, look out for entrances to several of the zone's houses, known as the Drowned Quarters. These hidden rooms contain a mixture of Magic Monsters, Rare Monsters, Gold piles and Chests with random loot. The Drowned City and the zones after it are challenging, so any extra loot is helpful.
The Molten Vault
Mektul, the Forgemaster: Unlock the Reforging Bench
Inside the Drowned City is the entrance to The Molten Vault, which is the setting of The Treasures of Utzaal Quest, given by Oswald. The objective is to reach the end of The Molten Vault and slay Unique Boss Mektul, the Forgemaster to claim The Hammer of Kamasa. This boss fight is challenging because Mektul is very resistant to Fire and Physical damage and has a large health pool. The fight has a deadline of around 4 minutes before the area is flooded with molten metal — which results in your death. Overlevel the fight and ensure you have plenty of damage and Fire Resistance. Check out the Act 3 Boss Guide for more information.
Defeating Mektul, the Forgemaster and giving The Hammer of Kamasa to Oswald rewards you with some Gold, an Uncut Gem and unlocks the Reforging Bench. The Reforging Bench allows you to convert three items of the same kind into a new item with a few nuances for different item types. It's a useful tool at endgame so you must eventually unlock it.
Apex of Filth
The Gentle Crone and Her Cauldron: Secret Vendor and Quality Flasks
In the Apex of Filth search for a Blue Mushroom, Green Mushroom, and a Red Mushroom. Further in the Zone, The Gentle Crone resides with her cauldron. Place the mushrooms into Cauldron obtain a reward of quality Life and Mana flasks. This works in both Normal and Cruel difficulty, with the latter giving a quality Ultimate Life Flask and Ultimate Mana Flask. Quality boosts the recovery amount of these flasks, so this is a helpful event in Cruel.
Much more important, however, is the fact that The Gentle Crone is the final secret NPC vendor in Act 3. She sells Jewellery and Spellcaster gear of higher quality. Getting good Jewellery is difficult, making this a powerful vendor for gearing up. The biggest drawback is the time it takes to reach the Crone. In Normal Difficulty, her wares are item level 41. In Cruel Difficulty, they are item level 61. Item level 61 Jewellery can easily be endgame viable.
Utzaal and Aggorat
Peculiar Fortunes: Earn Gold by Selling Treasure
Oswald has a taste for the finer things, especially mint-condition time-travel heisted treasures. The various Golden Idols you find in Utzaal and Aggorat can be sold to Oswald for Gold (sell them as you would any other gear to a vendor). The amount ranges from roughly 500 to 3000 Gold — a small boost, but not worth the effort to time-travel back to sell them to him. While the Golden Idols appear the same as quest items, they have no other use outside of selling them to Oswald for gold.
In Aggorat, there are the quarters of notable historical figures such as:
- Viper Napautzi, the Fang of the Vaal
- Uromoti, the Architect of Expansion
- Azcapa, Architect of the Guild
In each of these quarters there are Golden Idols, piles of Gold and Magic or Rare chests with random loot. To locate these quarters look for checkpoints with doorways near them.
The Blood Sacrifice: +2 Passive Skill Points
Kill Vaal Goliaths in Aggorat to obtain the Sacrificial Heart. After the story fight with the unique boss Viper Napuatzi, continue deeper into the zone and look for the Sacrificial Altar in the area saturated with blood. Place the heart and shank it viciously in Queen Atziri's name. Why? Because you obtain +2 Passive Skill Points / Weapon Swap Points in both Normal and Cruel for doing so — that's why!
