Introduction

Tane Octavius, a NPC that was introduced in Metamorph league (Patch 3.9, December 2019), wants you to collect Samples from Monsters to construct a creature for valuable rewards. Finish your first Metamorph encounter by killing specific monsters to complete the Pound of Flesh quest. After this Quest, Tane shows up in the Epilogue town and you can invite him to your hideout. You can also access Tane's Laboratory by talking to Tane or clicking on the mini icon at the Waypoint.

Tane's Laboratory

How to spawn a Metamorph

Collect one of each of the five different sample types from Metamorph monsters. Check the mini-map for their special icon to easily locate them. Once you have a full set of samples, you can summon Tane by clicking on the Metamorph Icon at the bottom of the screen and build your own monster.

This is the access to Tane's Laboratory on the mini icon at your Waypoint.

Waypoint to Tane's Laboratory

You can easily locate these monsters because they have a special icon on the mini-map and all you have to do is kill them.

Two monsters carrying Organs

To spawn/create the Metamorph, simply control-click on each type of sample or drag & drop them over to their corresponding slot. Samples can't be carried into other zones, so a Metamorph has to be constructed with what you have available in each map.

Scarabs

There are several ways to get a Metamorph on your maps. The most common method is using a Scarab in your Map Device. Metamorph Scarabs also increase the drop rate from Organs.

  • Rusted Metamorph Scarab - Area contains Metamorph Monsters Metamorph.
  • Polished Metamorph Scarab - Area contains Metamorph Monsters Metamorph. Bosses which drop an Itemised Sample drop an additional Itemised Sample
  • Gilded Metamorph Scarab - Area contains Metamorph Monsters. All Metamorph Monsters have Rewards. Metamorph Bosses which drop an Itemised Sample drop 2 additional Itemised Sample
  • Winged Metamorph Scarab - Area contains Metamorph Monsters. All Metamorph Monsters have Rewards. Metamorph Bosses which drop an Itemised Sample drop 2 additional Itemised Sample

Body Part Value

Each body part type has a value, which matches the rarity of the monster it dropped from. Samples are sorted in decreasing rarity from left to right. Higher rarity parts fill up the vial more, granting the monster more life and damage while increasing item quantity and rarity for rewards. If you build a metamorph that fills the entire meter, it also drops a permanent Organ used to construct an even bigger Metamorph in Tane's Laboratory.

Each specific metamorphic normally only drops a single type of organ. More than one type can drop if you use passives from the atlas area (which are mentioned below) or Scarabs regardless of how many unique samples are in its build.

Multipliers from Organs

It's vital that you don't simply look at the reward types of each sample but also its abilities and the total multipliers for damage and life. It can be tempting to bite more than you can chew and construct a Metamorph that absolutely destroys you. Once you hit the 75%,50%, and 25% mark on the life bar, it will spawn several monster waves to help you sustain life/flasks. Remember to carefully consider the map mods that will apply to the Metamorph and its monster waves.

Each Organ grants bonuses to the Metamorph:
  • % more Damage
  • % more maximum Life
  • % more Item Quantity
  • % more Item Rarity
  • % chance for extra Reward (+1 drop from the chosen type)

Notable Monster Abilities

  • Volatile mods are very strong, for example, crawlers
  • Most samples with soul in the name you want to avoid
  • Barrage especially soul barrage can be very dangerous
  • If you put an organ from a boss in the Metamorph it will gain its abilities
  • Adding up speed can end up also very dangerous (overlapping skill effects)
  • Life regen/leech making some of these invincible for shitty builds

Organ Vendor Recipe

Any three unique dropped organs or samples (even of differing types) can be sold to an NPC to receive a random organ different from those offered, with random rewards. For example, if you are lacking Hearts or Brains, vendor only one Liver, one Eye, and one Lung in the recipe to maximize the chances of receiving an Organ you need.

Sample Monster Modifiers

  • Unique bosses fill-up easy the bar on the right side, so choose maps with multiple bosses
  • Adding multiple unique Organs will still only drop one (at random)
  • The meter fills up more easily in higher-tier maps while it's almost impossible to do so in low maps
  • In combat, you can open the minimap and track the Metamorph icon to have a better vision of the target

Catalysts

  • Catalysts are exclusively obtained from Metamorph samples
  • Similar to other quality currencies, Catalysts add 5% on normal, 2% on magic, and 1% on rare/unique rarity items
  • Catalysts increase the named modifiers by up to 20% (implicit, affix, and suffix)

Drops and Rewards

You won't get any specific drop from a Metamorph if there is an image of an organ. Otherwise, a sample with an image of armour, chest, etc. can drop specific valuable items (which are mentioned below). A Unique monster drops unique samples. If only one unique sample is used to build a Metamorph, it will always drop that body part type as an organ. Using more than one unique sample will split the chances of those body part types evenly. Each sample with an image can drop one item in the list below. For example, if you use a sample with an Abyss image, you can get one out of four random outcomes mentioned in the list below:

Abyss

Armour

Blight

Breach

Currency

Delve

Essence

Gems

Harbinger

Jewellery

Maps

Metamorph

Unique

Weapon

Map Fragments

Scarabs

Divination Card

Enchanted Items

Legion

Summary

  • Choose maps with multiple Unique bosses if you use Scarabs.
  • Keep an eye on the green icons on the minimap and collect all the samples from monsters.
  • Construct a Metamorph that is both rewarding and doesn't annihilate you.
  • Use samples with special icons to get specific drops.
  • Try to completely fill the meter to gain an additional Organ drop.
