Monster Hunter Wilds Beta Presentation
Monster Hunter Wilds held a reveal presentation with a considerable amount of new information including the beta announcement trailer. This includes a new story location, a new locale, and three new monsters that inhabit the region. We also got dates for an upcoming open beta, where players can play the game for the first time in a non-event setting. Read on for more info.
Open Beta Announced
The beta is coming to Steam, Xbox Series X/S, and Playstation 5, and supports crossplay for all of these platforms. It begins at 8 PM PT on October 31st and ends at 7 PM PT on November 3rd. If you are a Playstation Plus subscriber, you have extended access from 8 PM on October 28th through 8 PM on October 30th.
There are three parts to the beta: character creation, a story trial and the opening cutscene, and a Doshaguma Hunt. The character creation has full functionality and can be carried over to the full release. You also have unlimited ability to remake your character during the beta. The story trial contains the opening cutscene and a Chatacabra hunt that includes basic tutorials.
Azuz, the Everforge
Azuz, the Everforge is a crafting village that plays a role in the story. The village is centered around a massive forge that utilizes the oil from the Oilwell Basin to light up on a large scale. In the new trailer, we see the flames starting to rage out of control for an unknown reason.
The Oilwell Basin
The Oilwell Basin is a new locale that is filled with flammable oil. While we don't know exactly what each of the seasons entails yet, one of them involves the oil setting alight and covering the area in fire. It seems as though it contains ruins of some kind.
Rompopolo
One of the most unique looking monsters I have ever seen, Rompopolo looks like a fusion between a frog, a hummingbird, and a leather balloon. Rompopolo is capable of filling itself with gas before using its long beak and tail to inject that gas into the tar. As pressure builds, the gas bursts out of the tar, causing small explosions. It also has a long and thin tongue that it can use to attack hunters.
Ajarakan
Ajarakan is an ape-like monster that has fiery patterns on its body. It is capable of using its hands to swing across the terrain, and seems to be able to set itself alight, becoming more powerful and aggressive in the process. It is somewhat reminiscent of Voljang, a species from Monster Hunter Frontier that was a fire-based ancestor of Rajang. In the trailer, we see the hunter fighting two of them at once.
The Black Flame
The apex monster of the Oilwell Basin is thus far known only as The Black Flame. It is a giant land octopus-like creature that is covered in oil and spews flame from its mouth and tentacles. This is one of the more alien designs in the franchise. While the reason for its name was not clear in this trailer, a good guess would be that it has a special mechanic with black flames either while enraged or at stages of the fight we have not yet seen.
