The Hunt
If you want your hunt to be successful, you need to be prepared and know your enemy. Learn below about the basic elements of each hunt and make sure that you have the necessary items and gear equipped.
Preparation
Before you start a hunt or go exploring, make sure to restock your item and ammo supply. To do so, first use your tent and then navigate to Transfer Items.
Item Pouch: Once you are in the item pouch menu, use the key/button input assigned to Manage Loadouts, which is listed at the bottom of your screen. There you can use a default loadout or create your own. Every time you select a loadout to use, it automatically restocks each item in the loadout.
Ammo Pouch: To refill your ammo pouch, you can use the same method as for the item pouch, or use the restock key/button input at the bottom of your screen.
Alma(NPC) → Post/Join Quest → Settings → Multiplayer Settings
Recommended: Only Support Hunters
If you prefer to play solo but enjoy hunting with AI companions, change the settings as recommended above. Additionally, you can activate “Automatic SOS Flare” to automatically call for AI companions as soon as you start a hunting quest.
You should always adjust your item loadout based on the Monster you are about to hunt. Using specific items vs a certain type of monster can provide you with a window of opportunity to deal high damage.
Here are some recommendations:
- Dung Pod: Helps to separate pack of monsters.
- Screamer Pod: Force monsters to resurface if they dig into the ground.
- Flash Pod: Forces flying monsters back to the ground. It can also interrupt some monster's special attacks.
- Shock Trap: Shocks the monster once it gets close to the trap.
- Pitfall Trap: Traps the monster in a pit for a brief moment once it gets close to the trap.
- Null Berry: Removes blight.
- Ghillie Mantle: Allows you to get close to the monster to perform a Sneak Attack
.
There are several important aspects of each monster which are usually displayed either in the in-game codex or on fan-made websites.
- Does it use a specific type of elemental attack?
- What is its weakness?
- If you require a specific part or item from the monster to craft a weapon or armor of your choice, ideally, you are aware of the method to increase the drop chance of it. For example, capturing a monster increases the drop chance of some items compared to slaying it. The destruction or cutting of certain parts during the hunt can do something similar.
Once the game is available, we will provide you with a link to sources with this information.
Once you have gained a greater understanding of the monster you are about to hunt, it is advisable to review your armor, weapon, and equipment skills. You should not use an armor that is weak to the element of the monster. Ideally, your weapon makes use of the monster's weakness to increase your damage.

Before you start the hunt, enter your camp to cook a meal. You can customize the ingredients to boost specific stats and gain food skills. You can also use the recommended meal in combination with "cook only with rations" option to simply increase your Health and Stamina.
Hunt Mechanics
Each of the below mechanics, except for “Wounds”, is related to an individual but hidden bar, which fills up if you use specific types of attacks. Once that bar is full, you can trigger a special interaction, which usually allows you to deal massive amount of uninterrupted damage.
How to create Wounds: Repeatedly attacking the same spot on a monster results in opening a wound on that spot, in most cases. Wounds are visible on the monster, but can also be highlighted red if you enter Focus Mode .
Special Interaction: Attacks to wounds deal increased damage. Using Focus Strike +
on open wounds deals high damage, closes/destroys it, and briefly staggers the monster. A wound stays open only for ~90 seconds before it closes, before this happens, attack the wound as much as possible and close it manually with a Focus Strike.
Tips:
- Ideally, you attack the wounded spots to deal additional damage and finish it off with the Focus Strike, before it closes on its own.
- Apart from special mechanics or wounds created by mounting interaction, closed wounds can't be re-opened again.
Required type of attack: Any attack, which hits the monster while you are in the air, aka. Jump Attacks. This can also be achieved by jump-attacking towards the monster while being on a Seikret (Dismount Attack).
Special Interaction: Once you trigger a mount, your character clutches onto the monster. Based on the size of the monster, you can clutch onto 2-3 different spots of the monster. Meanwhile, the monster tries to shake you off by performing special moves, indicated by a blur effect at the edge of your screen. When this happens, you can either Brace or move to a different spot by using
.
While you are mounted, your goal is to use Light and Strong Attacks
to open different wounds until the monster gets tired. Once the monster is visibly tired, use your Weapon Attack
to finish the mounting attack sequence, which brings you back to the ground and topples the monster for a brief moment.
Tips:
- Keep an eye on your Stamina Bar. If it depletes, you will be shaken off. Make sure to use the Weapon Attack
before it fully depletes.
- Unlike normal wounds, the wounds created while mounted can be re-opened every time you trigger this special interaction.
Required type of attack: Attack the monster's head while using blunt weapons or shield.
Special Interaction: Monster is stunned for a brief moment.
Required type of attack: Successful blocks increase the hidden clash gauge.
Special Interaction: Once you blocked incoming monster attacks a certain number of times, the next special attack of a monster triggers a Clash. To win the clash, you have to spam .
Tips:
- Blocking monster's range attacks doesn't increase the clash gauge.
- The number of blocks required to trigger the next clash increases after a successful clash.
- Not every monster can be clashed.
Required type of attack: Certain weapons have an Offset-Attack move. While using it, you have hyper armor, which prevents interruption caused by monster's attack. If you land this attack at the same time as a monster's attack, it triggers a special interaction.
Special Interaction: Some weapons can use a special follow-up attack after a successful Offset-Attack. Additionally, it can briefly stagger or even topple the monster after a certain amount of successful Offset-Attacks.
By inflicting a certain amount of damage to specific parts, such as the horn or armor of a monster, it is possible to break it. If you break a part, a notification appears on the right side of your screen, and the monster gets knocked down for a brief moment.
There are exceptions to this, like the tail. To cut the tail, you need to do deal severing damage to it. Only the Hammer and the Hunting Horn are unable to deal severing damage. Once you cut the tail, you should go to it and carve it.
Other benefits of breaking or cutting parts are as follows.
- Limiting the movement of the monster.
- Disabling or weakening certain attacks of the monster.
- Obtaining additional crafting materials. Some materials can be only obtained if you break certain parts.
During the Hunt
There are certain elements during the hunt that you should pay additional attention to to increase your survivability and clear rate. So always pay attention to your surrounding and make use of it whenever you can.
The nature is full of dangers. You can trigger certain environmental traps purposely by either using your Hook Slinger or by forcing the monster to trigger it by itself. Additionally, you can take advantage of Turf War mechanic between 2 different monsters by moving your monster towards a different one.
The video below from りのmh is an excelent example of using the environment to your advantage.
Running away or creating distance is usually the initial reaction of a beginner hunter to an incoming strong attack from a monster. This is rarely the best course of action. In most cases, dodging or moving to the side is much quicker and safer. In some cases, moving closer to the monster might help you to avoid getting hit.
So, if you learn and make use of the simplest way to avoid damage, you can survive longer and deal more damage.
Once you get knocked to the ground by the monster, you are in a very vulnerable state. To quickly escape from the dangerous situation, call your Seikret using . Your Seikret will rush to you and pick you up even if you are still on the ground.
Use + Down to shoot a SOS flare in case you need help, and want other players to join your hunt to assist you. If you have "Only Support Hunters" activated, AI hunters will join the hunt.
Please note that the monster's health increases (scales up) with each additional companion joining your hunt.

If you struggle to achieve a constant FPS of 60, you should consider enabling Frame Generation in the graphic settings. This setting cannot be enabled while you are in-game, so make sure to return to the main menu to change it.
If you have an older Nvidia GPU, you might not be able to activate Frame Generation. In this case, consider changing the upscaling method from Nvidia DLSS to AMD FSR. This should allow you to enable Frame Generation.
