Somber Smithing Stones Guide
Last Updated:June 17, 2024|Changelog
This guide shows you the locations of Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings, used to purchase unlimited Somber Smithing Stones from the Twin Maiden Husks. You need one Somber Smithing Stone of each quality to fully improve special weapons (Such as Moonveil). To upgrade, offer Runes and Somber Smithing Stones to Master Blacksmith Hewg at the Roundtable Hold. Somber Smithing Stones can be found in the world and rarely drop from enemies, but being able to purchase them allows you to upgrade all special weapons you acquire. There are five total Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings.
Pro Tip: The other 4 Bell Bearings are tied to Regular Smithing stones, learn their locations with our guide here.
Where To Buy Somber Smithing Stones
Offer your collected Bell Bearings to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold. Once accepted, you can purchase Somber Smithing Stones given you have the Runes necessary. If you don't yet have access to Roundtable Hold, check out our guide.
Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing Locations
Somberstone Miner Bell Bearing [1] is located in Caelid inside the Sellia Crystal Tunnel. There are two ways to gain access to Sellia Crystal Tunnel.
- The first is to navigate through Caelid until you find the cave entrance nearby the town of Sellia (Pictured below).
- Alternatively, you can open a trapped chest in Agheel's lake in Limgrave [Map link] which teleports you directly into the tunnel.
The enemies inside can be very difficult below level 30 so if you are trapped here after teleporting here run down the hill from where you spawn to find this caves Site of Grace. Otherwise, jump across the building rooftops to climb the tunnel. The Fallingstar Beast at the end holds the Bell Bearing. Returning this Bell Bearing to the Maiden Husks allows you to purchase Somber Smithing Stone [1] and Somber Smithing Stone [2] infinitely.
Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [2]
The second Bell Bearing can be accessed when you reach the Altus Plateau inside of Altus Tunnel (Entrance pictured below). This is a simple dungeon with the only complication being defeating the Crystalian Bosses at the end of the dungeon. Crystalian enemies have high defense at the start of a fight but get shattered once hit a few times allowing you to easily finish them off. Returning this Bell Bearing to the Maiden Husks allows you to purchase Somber Smithing Stone [3] and Somber Smithing Stone [4] infinitely.
Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [3]
Available when you've gained access to the Mountaintops of the Giants. This Bell Bearing is at the entrance to the First Church of Marika looted from a sprawled out body in the snow (Pictured below). Returning this Bell Bearing to the Maiden Husks allows you to purchase Somber Smithing Stone [5] and Somber Smithing Stone [6] infinitely.
Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [4]
This Bell Bearing also sits conveniently out in the open at Farum Azula. This item is on a corpse overlooking Farum Azula from the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace (Pictured below). Returning this Bell Bearing to the Maiden Husks allows you to purchase Somber Smithing Stone [7] and Somber Smithing Stone [8] infinitely.
Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [5]
In Farum Azula you unavoidably come across the fifth Bell Bearing. This Bell Bearing is found on a corpse just before the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Grace (Pictured below). It's guarded by only a few basic enemies. Returning this Bell Bearing to the Maiden Husks allows you to purchase Somber Smithing Stone [9] infinitely.
Final Upgrade Level
Upgrading a special weapon to +10 requires a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. These stones do not have a Bell Bearing and there are only 8 in each playthrough of the game. The first available of these stones is located in the Mohgwyn Palace guarded by a small army just beyond the Dynasty Mausoleum Site of Grace and just before Mohg's boss room (Pictured below). If you'd like more information on accessing this area as soon as possible check out our Accessing Shadows of the Erdtree Guide. Hopefully this guide has been helpful to you and you can now upgrade and test all the wonderful special weapons in Elden Ring.
Summary
With all Bell Bearings collected, the Twin Maiden Husks allow you to purchase as many Somber Smithing Stones as you require. This costs Runes, but allows you to upgrade your unique armaments for an excellent damage increase. Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones grant that final upgrade for your non unique weapons but are highly limited. If you are looking to upgrade non-unique weapons, check out our guide on how to find Smithing Miner's Bell Bearings.
