How to Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood
This is a guide to accessing and defeating Mogh, Lord of Blood. He was originally an optional and extremely difficult boss. Now, players must defeat him to access the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. If you are returning to Elden Ring after a full playthrough the quick and dirty is that you must defeat Starscourge Radahn & Mogh, Lord of Blood then enter the Land of Shadow through the large egg Mohg guards.
Accessing Mohg, Lord of Blood
Access to Mohg is usually quite difficult. His underground lair is normally only accessible once you've unlocked the Mountaintops deep into a playthrough [Map Link] but luckily we can get in early by doing Varre's questline. This gives us easy access to this late game zone after only completing Stormveil Castle.
Starting Varre's Quest
Varre is the first NPC most people talk to in Elden Ring. As long as you don't kill him, his quest progresses even without interacting with him during the opening of the game.
If you have already progressed past Limgrave (killing Godrick in Stormveil Castle) proceed to the Rose Church section of this guide.
Otherwise you should check out the Beginner's Guide and the Path to Power to get ready for Stormveil.
The Rose Church
Having finished Stormveil Castle be sure to return to Roundtable Hold and talk to the Two Fingers about your victory. Varre moves to his new location in the Rose Church which couldn't be simpler to find. Look for the large island directly south of Raya Lucaria Academy in Liurnia [Map Link].
Varre's Tasks
Speaking with Varre, he asks what you thought of the Two Fingers. Choose "They didn't seem right" when prompted and Varre. This vaguely assigns your next task to invade 3 other players using the Festering Bloody Finger's he gives you. You do not have to engage with the online component as you can do the NPC invasion available in Altus Plateau [Map Link] instead. If you have access to online play, you do not have to win the 3 invasions to progress, simply participate in them.
Varre assigns you a final task before you can enter Mogh's Palace after completing your invasions. Acquire the blood of a Maiden. Lucky for you, there is a freshly dead Maiden in the Church of Inhibition [Map Link]. You do have to fight the invader Vyke to freely access this church but you shouldn't have major problems with him if you're following one of our build guides.
Mohgwyn Palace
With maiden blood in hand return to Varre and become anointed. This gives you access to an infinite supply of invasions for those interested in PvP and talking to him again rewards you with the Pureblood Knight's Medal. When used the Medal sends you to the base of Mohg's Palace so you now have instant access to the area whenever you'd like and can ascend to fight Mohg, Lord of Blood.
Prepare to Defeat Mohg
Getting to the Moghwyn Palace is a relatively simple endeavor compared to defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood which is going to be considerably more challenging. In the original release of Elden Ring, Mohg was an entirely optional late game fight. Now he is required to access the Shadows of the Erdtree DLC. This means that he is second in difficulty only to the final bosses of Elden Ring and Malenia (A much harder optional boss). To start you off lets grab a couple unfair advantages that can be a big help.
Mohg's Shackle
Mohg's Shackle can be used to stun Mohg pinning him to the floor of his arena briefly up to twice during the first phase of his fight giving you the opportunity to inflict a large amount of damage. It is also especially helpful for setting up buffs before Mohg enters his phase 2 if the fight is drawn out. The Shackle found under the Leyndell Royal Capital in the sewers after the Underground Roadside Site of Grace and just before the Leyndell Catacombs entrance. It is guarded by one of the giant lobsters but can be picked up without defeating it.
Purifying Crystal Tear
Mix this Tear into your Wondrous Flask of Physick to entirely negate the damage from Mohg's transition into phase two as long as you drink it at some point during phase one. Mohg still heals as he normally does during his phase transition but you won't have to use many Sacred Flasks to absorb the damage. Obtain this Tear by defeating the invader at the Second Church of Marika on the Altus Plateau (Pictured below).

- Vulnerable to Scarlet Rot

- Very Vulnerable to Bleed
- 80 Fire Resistance
- 40 Magic Resistance
- 40 Holy Resistance

General Boss Tips
- You should be at least level 100 for this fight.
- Your special weapons should be at least +8 for this fight and regular weapons at least +21
- Mohg's movements are mostly slow and deliberate making it possible to fight him at range with Sorceries or Incantations like Lightning Spear in safety for most of the fight.
- Players with enough Faith investment should be using Golden Vow and either Flame Grant Me Strength or Howl of Shabriri to increase damage.
- Mohg heals significantly when entering phase two so be sure not to recklessly overextend thinking the fight is halfway over when he begins the second phase.
- During phase two watch for the bloodflame that sticks to the floor as it deals very high damage over time.
- Dodging to his right for magical attacks and his left for physical attacks is generally correct.
- Use upgraded summons for this fight such as Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche
Enter Shadows of the Erdtree
With both Mohg and Radahn defeated the way is now open to Shadows of the Erdtree by touching the hand at the back of Mohg's arena. Hopefully, this guide has been helpful to you and be sure to look out for our Elden Ring DLC coverage.
