How to find and Defeat the Scadutree Avatar

This is a guide to finding and defeating The Scadutree Avatar. This boss is optional but extremely fun and difficult! With that being said, it is a bit tricky to find. Follow this guide to learn everything that you need to beat this flowery foe.

Accessing The Scadutree Avatar requires you to have made it a decent chunk Church District. Your journey starts at the Church District Entrance Site of Grace. However, if this is your first time exploring this area, you need to lower the water before getting to the boss. This is done by following the buildings in a counterclockwise fashion to find the correct lever. Here is a short and quick video on the fastest way there!

After lowering the water level, respawn at the Church District Entrance Site of Grace. Once there, start by carefully jumping to the nearby roof, you can fall off any edge safely. Now that you are on the ground floor continue to where the large church pictured below is located. But watch out, there are Burning Putrid Corpses as well as a tough Fire Knight enemy. Kill or avoid them and head down the right path until you are at the door. Now for the world's longest elevator ride! Once you've made it to the bottom there is no going wrong from here! Follow the path down until you make it to the Tree Worship Sanctum Site of Grace.

The first weakness of the Scadutree Avatar is its large flower-like head. While it is possible to damage the body of the boss; your damage is most effective against its face. Secondly, another major weakness is fire damage. Being a plant based boss it takes heavy amounts of increased damage to all things fire. Generally, the best sources of this being Flaming Strike. This is fire based Ash of war that can be obtained early into the base game. Infusing your weapon with the Flame Affinity or Flame Art, makes your weapon do inherent fire damage and is a strong option against this boss. Weapons with added range like Halberds or spears help you get those hard-to-reach hits when you need them.

The Scadutree Avatar deals heavy holy and physical damage, and has a variety of long range and close range attacks. Equip your highest level Haligdrake Talisman, to greatly reduces the amount of damage you take during this encounter. The Scadutree Avatar is completely immune to Scarlet rot, However it can be Poisoned. Additionally The Scadutree Avatar's biggest strength is that it has a grand total of 3 phases! While the bosses health only resets to 75%, its resistances increase with each phase.

The first phase is the Scadutree Avatar's easiest phase. The Avatar exposes its head after a lot of its combos, often leaving it vulnerable to attack. However the attack you should watch out for most is the "Grab" attack. The Avatar's head glows gold and slams down, if you are caught in the slam you are going to take heavy damage. Rolling just away gives you an opportunity for an easy hit. The only other attack that you should look out for is the "Land of Shadow" incantation. The Avatar lifts its head high into the air releasing three volleys of holy "Shadows". Run into either direction and just as the beams are about to hit you, roll the opposite direction

In the second phase the Scadutree Avatar immediately uses a dash attack, the Avatar pulls back and dashes rapidly, the number of charges vary, but the boss usually does this three times. Its Land of Shadows now only shoots out one volley. Dodge this in the same way you did in phase one.

In phase three the Scadutree Avatar has a large AoE (Area of Effect) holy damage attack that it uses right when the boss emerges, the timing to dodge for this attack is very awkward. However the further away you are from the boss, the less damage you take. Otherwise this phase is similar to the second phase. At about 25% HP left the boss releases the same devastating holy AoE attack, however this time it pulses three times.
