The Progression route outlined in this guide is merely a recommendation. It is by no means the only way to explore the world in Expedition 33.

Free Roam Zones

Zone Progression Guide

The zones in this category typically do not feature mandatory battles. Instead, they often include mini-games, puzzles, hidden lore, or unique NPCs. These areas can be visited at any time, provided the path to them has been unlocked. There is no particular order or progression for these zones.

  • Blades' Graveyard - Music Record
  • Boat Graveyard - Music Record
  • Ancient Gestral City - Music Record
  • Twilight Quarry - Music Record
  • Lost Woods - Music Record
  • Gestral Beach - There are multiple zones with this name. In each zone, you have to complete a mini-game to win fancy rewards.
  • White Tree - Expedition Log
  • The Meadows - Music Record
  • Flying Casino - How to make the Gestral talk? A secret waiting to be discovered.
  • The Small Bourgeon - Feed the White Nevron with Monster Skins to make it grow.

Combat Zones

Zone Progression Guide

The game does not tell you what level an enemy or zone is. However, if your Expedition is too weak (underleveled), even defeating normal enemies in a zone could be impossible. The recommendations are organized by zones related to the main quest. After completing such a zone, you may want to explore the optional zones listed beneath it before progressing with your main quest.

Post Gestral Village

  • Hidden Gestral Arena - Face and defeat four different Gestral Champions to get special Pictos. These provide significant buffs to the character's combat prowess when fighting alone.
  • The Red Woods - Give the friendly Nevron Chroma to obtain a powerful Picto. If you don't have the Chroma, feel free to come back later. After, you can choose to fight the Nevron, but he is a very high-level enemy best fought when you're late in the endgame.

Post Stone Wave Cliffs

  • Yellow Harvest - They are consuming the world, why? In this zone, there is a lot to discover.
  • Stone Wave Cliffs Cave - Slay the Chromatic Nevron.

Post Monoco's Station

  • Crushing Cavern - Unstable ground and an ambush. The perfect combination!
  • Esoteric Ruins - Solve the maze and help the "spirit". (Combat optional)

Post Old Lumière

  • Stone Quarry - Hit the correct notes to assist the White Nevron to master its instrument.
  • Abbest Cave - Slay the Chromatic Nevron.
  • The Carousel - Help the Grandis by breaking the ice and setting the Carousel in motion.

Post Sirène

  • Costal Cave - The world's greatest White Nevron Smith duo awaits you. You can unlock powerful equipment by completing the challenge.
  • Sinister Cave - Slay the Chromatic Nevron.
  • Falling Leaves - Slay the Chromatic Nevron.
  • Crimson Forest - Solve the puzzle to summon the boss. You might want to take a closer look at those swords.
  • Floating Cemetery - Another White Nevron. But it is tired. You choose its fate!
  • The Crows - It is not as empty as it seems. It is not that difficult. The name of the zone is the biggest hint.
  • Isle of the Eyes - Feeling watched? Get rid of the ominous gaze to spawn the bridge!
  • Sacred River - A Gestral Merchant with some high-quality goods.

Post Story

The post-story zones are very non-linear. It's hard to recommend a specific level, but most of these zones should be appropriate for a level 50+ party.

  • Sirène's Dress - Explore this area as part of Lune's relationship quest.
  • Reacher - Tied to Maelle's relationship quest.
  • Endless Tower - Climb floor by floor and defeat challenging foes. This starts easy, but later floors are extremely challenging. You should come back to this zone regularly, as you get a lot of great rewards for clearing the floors.
  • Frozen Heart - This zone is very rewarding if you can make use of the enemy weaknesses. Some Nevrons constantly change their element between ice and fire when damaged by that type. Others change their element after they attack.
  • White Sands - Just a Music Record...there is more to it, right?
  • The Chosen Path - Ideally, all your characters are capable of winning a 1v1 battle. Once used, the same character cannot fight again until you complete all the trials.
  • Sky Island - Slay the Chromatic Nevron.
  • Dark Shores - Each group guards a treasure.
  • Endless Night Sanctuary - Learn more about the Gestrals.
  • Dark Gestral Arena - This is not an easy challenge. They are much stronger than the ones you fought in the Hidden Gestral Arena.

Endgame Zones

Many of these late-game zones contain extremely dangerous enemies; a level 75+ party is recommended before tackling these challenges.

  • The Fountain - Reward or Fight, depends on your past and future actions. It might be already too late for you.
  • Flying Manor - A series of difficult fights, culminating in boss battles.
  • Painting Workshop - Explore with caution.
  • Sunless Cliffs - Only one may enter this challenge at a time.
  • Renoir's Drafts - Lurking deep beneath the waves is a challenging zone that holds some secrets.
  • The Abyss - Are you up for a true challenge?

Summary

  • Don't hesitate to explore Free Roam Zones as soon as you discover them. The beautiful scenery alone makes them worth a visit.
  • Some zones can only be accessed after completing a specific quest or unlocking the path.
  • However, venturing into high-level dangerous zones can swiftly lead to the destruction of your expedition.
  • If you're confused on where to go, use this zone progression guide to find your way in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
