Path of Exile 2 Beta Delayed

Jonathan Rogers announced the Path of Exile 2 beta being delayed at the end of the Ranger showcase during the Necropolis Reveal stream.

The Path of Exile 2 Beta was scheduled to begin on June 7th, 2024. There's no new date (yet), but he said not to expect it anytime before late 2024.

Jonathan and the Path of Exile 2 team came to this decision after implementing WASD controls and beginning the polishing process. Supporting different control schemes opens the game up to more players but this requires additional development time. You need to think about all the skills. It takes time to test them all using WASD controls.

Then you need to look at monster abilities and do the same thing. During the Q&A with ZiggyD, Jonathan, and Mark talked about the changes made to enemy tracking as a result of WASD support. Without tracking it would be trivial to sidestep Boss abilities due to the precision offered by WASD. The end goal is to make combat both meaningful and challenging, which requires a lot of refinement. Jonathan felt they would have been able to deliver a functional Beta by June 7th but wouldn't have been able to polish it up to meet GGG's standards. The goal is a polished experience and a complete game by the time beta launches.

I'm disappointed that I won't be playing Path of Exile 2 on June 7th. However, I'd rather have a good but delayed beta than yet, another minimum sellable disaster. But with each reveal, I like the design philosophy for Path of Exile 2 a bit more. Path of Exile 1's click to move always felt imprecise to me, especially with high movement speed and WASD could be the fix to that. It's refreshing to see skills designed to combo with each other mechanically as opposed to simply making numbers go up.
