In our Loot Filter Guide we showed you the basics of how the Loot Filter works. In this guide we show you how to get the most out the Filters we use in our own guides at Maxroll. If you're using one of our guides and you want to make some adjustments to the filter or just want a better understanding of how it works, then this guide is for you! The guide covers both Endgame and Leveling guides, so no matter where you are in the game you can benefit from understanding the ins and outs of Loot Filters.

Our Filters are designed to be intuitive, so they don't require a high level understanding of the game to figure out. They follow the standard item color scheme as much as possible so transitioning to them is easy. They're also designed with customization in mind. They work great out of the box but are easily modifiable to fit your style and adapt to your own progress. We want you to use our filters in whatever way you choose!

We highly recommend you have one of our Loot Filters open while reading through this guide. It makes it much easier to follow along and understand all the aspects of the Filter as they're covered. Use the Filter for the build you are currently playing. If you haven't chosen a build yet, here's an example you can use instead.

Endgame Build Guides

The Filters for these guides need to handle a wide variety of gear scenarios, from just starting the build to pushing for Best in Slot items. To accomplish this, we've broken up certain parts of the filter to emphasize items that are even better than usual. Having this functionality in place provides the added benefit of allowing players to turn off the less strict rules in the filter once their gear makes those rules obsolete.

Below we guide you through every rule in the filter, explaining how they work and offering tips to customize the filter. We start at the bottom and work our way to the top.

Bottom Rule - The 'Catch All'

To sum it up, this rule catches all of the junk. Remember from the Loot Filter Guide that rules higher up in the Filter take priority over rules below. This means that the very top rule has highest priority, while the bottom rule has lowest. Our 'catch all' rule is there to filter anything that happens to get through all of the other rules, hiding them from sight. Anything that makes it this far isn't worth picking up, so it makes sense to just remove it altogether. This rule only Filters for Common, Magic and Rare items because you're choosing to see every, Idol, Unique and Exalted drop (you never know when one of those could be exceptionally good, even if it isn't for the build you're playing).

This rule filters out all of the items that make it past the other rules.

Idols

This is a set of two rules that handle all of your Idol Filtering. You want to see all Idols because they can be very valuable even if they aren't for your build, but you also want to easily identify ones that do have the right build affixes. The lowest rule recolors any Idols that have at least one affix that could be good for the build you're playing. The second recolors and also emphasizes particularly good Idols with two high value affixes.

Together, these two rules make it clear when a good Idol for your build drops.

Recoloring For Shatter/Removal

These two rules exist to help find items that you can break down for crafting Shards. Some affixes can be hard to come by if you relied on just picking up Shards on the ground, use Rune of Shattering and Rune of Removal to find these more reliably. The lower rule looks for Affixes that are relatively rare early on but eventually become plentiful. The higher rule emphasize particularly rare affixes that you may have a hard time finding for much longer. You can add and remove Affixes from either of these rules as you need to assist you with finding the Shards you need.

For more information on this Crafting method check out our Beginner Crafting Guide.

These rules help you build up your Shard inventory so you can craft the items you need.

Show All Exalted Items

Since you don't want to hide any Exalted items you need a rule to make sure it doesn't happen, and this is that rule. Put it this far down so any Exalted items that are especially good for your build will be emphasized by a different rule higher in the Filter.

This rule ensures that you never hide an Exalted item.

Show Rules

This set of rules and the next make up the bulk of the Filter. Here you have rules that are tailored to the specific item types you want to find (Example: Shadow Daggers Bladedancer has a rule for Daggers but not Wands because the build doesn't use Wands). They shows items of the right item type that also fit the following parameters:

  • Only the subtypes that are valuable to the build (Example: low level weapon bases will almost never be shown).
  • Have at least two of the affixes you are looking for.

If the item fits these parameters it will show and follow the traditional color scheme for those items (Magic, Rare, or Exalted).

All of the conditions for the 'show' rules.

Show Rules (Strict)

This set of rules is similar to the previous set, but the requirements are much stricter. If an item fits the parameters of one of these rules it follows the traditional color scheme and is also emphasized. The parameters for this rule are:

  • Only the subtypes that are valuable to the build (Example: low level weapon bases will almost never be shown).
  • Have at least three of the affixes you are looking for.
  • Each affix must be at least Tier 3.

The purpose of this set is twofold: It makes especially valuable items stand out from the rest while also providing a rule that is more suited to late game item hunting. Once a player has found and crafted an item that is better than anything the basic 'show' rule would offer, they can turn off that rule by deselecting the check box. Then they will only see items that fit this much stricter rule.

All of the conditions for the 'show (strict)' rules.

Recolor High Value Affixes

Some affixes are so valuable you want to see them regardless of what item they're on. This is especially true early on when build defining affixes, like ones that increase the level of an important skill, have not been added to the build. Exceptionally high value Idol affixes can also go here. We encourage adding and removing Affixes to this rule as you need.

Some Affixes are too good to miss. This rule makes sure you don't.

Show All Unique/Set Items

you typically always want to see these items because they always have the potential to be exceptional. This is especially true for Uniques that can roll with Legendary Potential, making an otherwise ordinary item have the capacity for something much greater. That's why this rule sits at the top, ensuring you never miss one of these potentially high value items. If you have all of the Set items and don't want to see those any more you can deselect it from the rule, but we highly recommend checking every Unique that drops!

For more information on Legendaries check out our Legendary Items Crafting Guide.

These are high value items, so you want to always see them.

Leveling Build Guides

While the endgame has far more loot to filter out, that doesn't make a leveling filter any less valuable. Being able to find the items you need while ignoring the items that have no value to your build is key to getting through the campaign and into your endgame build. Our leveling filters are designed to help you do just that, and even set you up well to transition smoothly into that endgame build.

Bottom Rule - The 'Catch All'

To sum it up, this rule catches all of the junk. Remember from our Loot Filter Guide that rules higher up in the Filter take priority over rules below. This means that the very top rule has highest priority, while the bottom rule has lowest. Our 'catch all' rule is there to filter anything that happens to get through all of the other rules, hiding them from sight. Anything that makes it this far isn't worth picking up, so it makes sense to just remove it altogether. This rule only Filters for Common, Magic and Rare items because you're choosing to see every Unique and Exalted drop (you never know when one of those could be exceptionally good, even if it isn't for the build you're playing).

This rule filters out all of the items that make it past the other rules.

Show All First Two Levels For Gold

The first vendor can have some really great items for starting out, but you need enough gold to afford them. This rule ensures that you can see all of the items at the start to sell them for gold. Once you reach level 3 it is no longer necessary to sell items, so this rule turns off.

This rule makes it easier to buy items at the first vendor.

Recoloring Class Affixes For Storage/Shatter/Removal

Class affixes are valuable affixes that can be hard to come by, especially during the endgame. This rule makes sure you don't miss any so that you can use them in any way you see fit, including breaking them down for Shards with Rune of Shattering and Rune of Removal or storing them for later.

For more information on this Crafting method check out our Beginner Crafting Guide.

Class Affixes are hard to come by early, so youwant to make sure they always show.

Early Campaign

This is a set of three rules that only apply until about level 30 (Guide makers might adjust levels according to the needs of the build). The lowest rule shows items with any affixes that might be useful for the build. Since this is early game the rule isn't strict, allowing anything that has even a single tier 1 affix to show. The rule above hides anything that has an unwanted base, regardless of whether it has a good affix or not. Items that fit in here are usually weapons that aren't used by the build. The highest rule is a simple recolor for very high value affixes. This is for items that you really don't want to miss because they could represent a huge upgrade, like Movement Speed. Our filters already have everything that's really valuable highlighted, but if there are additional affixes you want to see in red feel free to add them!

These three rules only apply until around Level 30.

Mid Campaign

Around level 30 the Filter gets a little bit more strict and requires a few more rules. These rules carry you to around level 54. Our bottom rule is similar to the one for early campaign. It shows affixes that you want, but now the tier of the affix must be at least two. You also start to filter out some low level bases for the weapon types you 're using. The difference between low level weapons and better ones is often so big that even a good affix won't make up for it. This section also has a recolor rule at the top for high value affixes and it works the same way as the one from the early Campaign.

These rules carry you through the rest of the campaign.

Early Endgame

This is as far as the leveling Filters takes you. By the time you've reached this part of the filter you should be deciding on what endgame build to transition into. Although the filter is set to work all the way to level 100 we don't recommend taking it that far. Instead, this section is meant to be a 'bridge' between the leveling and endgame filters. The rules here work similar to the less strict portion of the endgame filter. It only shows items that follow these parameters:

  • Only the correct item types (Example: Bow for a Marksman)
  • Only the subtypes that are valuable to the build (Example: low level weapon bases will almost never be shown).
  • Have at least two of the affixes you are looking for.

This gets you started on gearing for the endgame until you have decided on an endgame build. But don't wait too long! These leveling guides are not meant to be pushed deep into the endgame.

These rules are here to help you transition to an endgame build.

Hide Non-Class Items

Items that aren't for your class don't drop very often, but when they do they are useless to your build and trading is not yet available in the campaign. This cuts down on clutter just a bit by hiding any items that you can't use.

Items in this rule won't help your build.

Show All Unique/Set Items

You typically always want to see these items because they always have the potential to be exceptional. This is especially true for Uniques that can roll with Legendary Potential, making an otherwise ordinary item have the capacity for something much greater. That's why this rule sits near the top, ensuring you never miss one of these potentially high value items. If you have all of the Set items and don't want to see those any more you can deselect it from the rule, but we highly recommend checking every Unique that drops!

These are high value items, so you want to always see them.

Show All Exalted Items

Similar to Uniques/Sets, you don't want to hide any Exalted items so you need a rule to make sure it doesn't happen, and this is that rule. Make sure to check these potentially high value items when they drop!

This rule ensures that you never hide an Exalted item.
