The Final Shape

Welcome to the Phoenix Protocol Solar Warlock Build Guide! This build utilizes the Exotic chest armor Phoenix Protocol and its ability to recharge your Super at a rapid rate by getting kills and assists while inside of your Well of Radiance. Your main goal with this build is to provide team support; casting your Super ability every time it is available does just that! Even better, there is potential to cast a second one before the first is even over!

A secondary spotlight to this build is your ability to spread Scorch and Ignitions from a distance largely thanks to Polaris Lance and your Fusion Grenade. These Ignitions help you dish out a significant amount of ad clear, as well as dealing with Unstoppable Champions. With its high damage potential, your primary weapon becomes a pseudo special weapon with unlimited ammo if you remain on target with accurate shots.

WARNING: Apex Predator requires access to the Forsaken DLC pack to unlock from the Last Wish Raid.

Pros
  • Frequent Ignitions.
  • Ultimate support build.
  • Able to stun all Champion types.
Cons
  • Best played in a team setting.
  • Requires medium to high ad density.

Gameplay Loop

Using Phoenix Protocol, the gameplay loop is fairly simple for a Solar Warlock: get your Well of Radiance as fast as possible. To start, consume your Fusion Grenade to gain Heat Rises. With Heat Rises, you can glide around in the air uninhibited by shooting your weapons or throwing grenades. Final blows while airborne quickly feed your melee ability energy back to full and increase the duration of the buff. Take advantage of this, as Impact Induction grants a small portion of grenade energy, and your grenades fills your Super energy at a rapid rate when using Ashes to Assets. Activate Phoenix Dive while airborne right after Heat Rises to gain stacks of Restoration. This keeps you alive and in the fight.

Once you're at full Super energy, cast Well of Radiance. While inside your Well, kills and assists refund Super ability energy very quickly, maxing out at a 50% return. Kills with grenades and setting off Ignitions continue to fuel your Super to its next cast. Deal enough damage with your weapons and abilities, and you're able to cast a second Well before the first one is over if necessary. This does require some heavier ad density, so keep that in mind. If enemies are starting to dwindle, it's best to hold onto that next Super cast until you come across another wave. Cast your Phoenix Dive to pull in nearby orbs to top your Super up and activate Solar Weapon Surge. Phoenix Protocol.

Warlocks have a huge support playstyle here, generating orbs with Solar abilities and empowering your fireteams with Cure and Well of Radiance.

Ability Breakdown

Super

  • Well of Radiance
    • Plunge a Solar sword into the ground that heals on cast and creates a rally point for your team for 30 seconds. Inside of the Well, allies are constantly healed, gain damage resistance and gain the damage buff and shield penetrating benefits of Radiant. This is most commonly used to gather inside of before a damage phase on a boss. Allies gain Radiant for 8 seconds when exiting the Well. You are casting this Solar Warlock ability a lot while using Phoenix Protocol.

WARNING: Being in a Well of Radiance removes any active Restoration effect, so it needs to be reapplied after the Well has ended.

Abilities

  • Phoenix Dive - Jump in the air and activate your class ability. You and surrounding allies gain 2 stacks of Cure. This class ability works in conjunction with Heat Rises, giving you Restoration.
  • Burst Glide - Your jump ability is up to you, but the example setup uses Burst Glide.
  • Celestial Fire - Send out a spiral of three explosive Solar bolts, Scorching targets on hit.
  • Fusion Grenade - An explosive grenade that sticks to enemies and detonates after a short time. Spreads Scorch on detonation.

Aspects

  • Touch of Flame - Causes your Fusion Grenade to explode a second time.
  • Heat Rises - Gives the ability to glide without being interrupted by shooting, using your melee ability and throwing grenades. Any kills while airborne feed into your melee energy regeneration and extend the aspect's buff duration.

Fragments

  • Ember of Ashes - All forms of Scorch apply more stacks.
  • Ember of Benevolence - Restoration, Cure and Radiant applied to a teammate grants increased ability regeneration for a short time.
    • This fragment costs you 10 Discipline.
  • Ember of Char - Solar Ignitions spread more Scorch stacks to targets affected by the Ignition.
    • This fragment gives you 10 Discipline.
  • Ember of Empyrean - All Solar weapon and ability final blows extend the duration of active Radiant and Restoration buffs.
    • This fragment costs you 10 Resilience.

Gearing

Required Gear and Weapons

Phoenix Protocol - Kills and assists you make while standing in your Well of Radiance return Super energy. This return is capped at 50%. Have your teammates stand in your Well while they get kills to reach this cap faster.

How to acquire:

  • Purchase from Xur if available.
  • Decrypt Exotic engrams at Rahool.
  • Farm the expert lost sector on Chest armor days.
  • Complete the Vex Strike Force Public Event on Neomuna.
  • This Exotic armor piece is not locked behind the purchase of any DLC.

Stat Priorities

  • Resilience > Discipline > Recovery
  • Resilience is always the most coveted stat when in a PVE environment. It increases your damage resistance and shield capacity. The goal is 100 Resilience.
  • Discipline decreases the cooldown on your grenade ability, allowing it to charge faster.
  • Recovery governs the cooldown on the Warlocks class ability and decreases the time it takes to regenerate your health and shields.

Recommend Weapons

  • Energy Weapon: Polaris Lance - An amazing long range weapon choice when paired with the Solar subclass. Able to prime Ignitions by spreading Scorch with its intrinsic effect, The Perfect Fifth.
  • Power Weapon: Apex Predator - Great for damaging tankier enemies and clearing smaller packs of ads.
    • Apex Predator requires access to the Forsaken DLC pack to unlock from the Last Wish Raid.

Variants

  • Swap Polaris Lance for Sunshot or a legendary primary weapon with Incandescent.
    • Sunshot and weapons with Incandescent mimic the Scorch effect from The Perfect Fifth. Use during shorter range engagements and activities.
  • Swap Heat Rises and Ember of Empyrean with Icarus Dash and Ember of Eruption.
    • While removing some of the self healing and ability regeneration, this swap offers some movement tech and increases the range of your Ignitions. This makes for an equally offensive but different playstyle.
  • Swap out a fragment of your choice for Ember of Torches.
    • This fragment gives you the ability to become Radiant while being outside of your Well of Radiance. With a secondary way to apply Radiant, this build has all three Champion enemy types covered when using Riptide.
  • Feel free to utilize other weapons outside of your Energy slot, as they do not make or break this build. Use what works for you!

Summary

Thanks to Phoenix Protocol, this Solar Warlock Build is a near perfect form of support for all of your future fireteams. Spread Scorch and Ignitions from a safe range in the sanctuary of your Well of Radiance. Once the Super energy returns are capped, continue to take advantage of Super ability gains by spamming your Fusion Grenade whenever it's off cooldown. Become the legendary phoenix and empower your team with Solar Light and immortality!
