Path of Exile 2 has an asynchronous trading system for players to sell unwanted currencies and items. This "auction house" streamlines the trading experience in PoE 2. You can still trade directly with other players by traveling to their hideout should you so desire.

Note: Very little is known about Trade in Path of Exile 2, most of the article is based on the Currency Exchange test from Path of Exile 1's Settlers of Kalguur League and what Jonathan has said in interviews. As soon as we know more we'll update the post so be sure to pin it to be the first to know about any updates leading up to the Early Access on November 15th!

You spend Gold to list items on the Exchange and players can purchase them even if you are offline. The trade completes automatically so be careful to double check prices before you make the listing! Listing currency items costs a bit of Gold, but Unique items like Headhunter or Shavronne's Wrappings cost significantly more.

Currency Exchange Mechanics

The Currency Exchange is an asynchronous trading system that was added to Path of Exile 1 as part of 3.25, Settlers of Kalguur. We don't know if the Path of Exile 2 Exchange works the same way, but here are some of the basics to give you an idea of how it might work.

You begin by selecting the currency you want, and the currency you have. In this case, the currency you want appears on the left side, and the currency you are selling appears on the right.

The Currency Exchange Market supports all stackable currency items. Based on what Jonathan said previously, the PoE 2 exchange should support all of this plus regular items as well. You can use the search box at the bottom to find a currency more quickly or use the tabs on the left for quick navigation.

After selecting both currencies you need to set a ratio. Common market ratios are shown for your convenience. After you set the ratio you can place your order and pay the Gold fee. The amount of Gold required scales with the number of currency items being traded.

Once there is a purchase request for the same currency with the correct ratio, your order fills. If there's no compatible open order you may need to wait a bit for the order to complete.

PoE 2 Exchange

As far as we know, the Path of Exile 2 exchange allows players to trade asynchronously in the same manner as the Currency Exchange Market in Path of Exile 1. But previously, Jonathan mentioned Unique items and said the Gold price is significantly higher for non-currency items. This implies you can trade everything on the Path of Exile 2 Exchange, including Rares and Uniques!

Faustus, the Financier runs the Currency Exchange in the original Path of Exile.

This presents buyers with an instant buyout option, provided they have the Gold. Sellers, on the other hand, get to enjoy the convenience of not having to leave their map to complete a trade.

If you prefer to whisper someone, travel to their hideout (or a compatible town), and trade them directly you can still do that in PoE 2. Depending on how easy it is to farm Gold, and how much it costs to trade a Unique, direct trades may be the best way to buy or sell things like Headhunter.

What Can You Trade?

Almost everything in Path of Exile 1 is tradable. This includes Currency items, Gear, Uniques, Maps, and Itemized League Mechanics. But a few key items like Gold and Expedition Currencies are untradable.

GGG hasn't confirmed many details of what is tradable in PoE 2, but we can make some assumptions based on the original game. Gold is untradable, so it acts as an economy limiter, discouraging flippers from purchasing rare items just to immediately resell them. It's very likely that most items in PoE 2 are tradable, and do not bind when traded or equipped. GGG has always been against soulbinding items, or placing harsh limits on the economy.

Summary

Trade in Path of Exile 2 includes both direct and asynchronous options. You can use Gold to create a listing on the Exchange, or instantly buy your next upgrade. Currency items cost less Gold to make it easy to trade them in bulk. But rare Uniques cost significant amounts of Gold, so it may be best to trade these items directly.
