Sunwuko Wave of Light Monk Guide

Welcome to the fastest build in Diablo 3: the Monkey King's Garb Sunwuko Wave of Light Monk. With the ability to teleport across maps vaporizing every monster on the screen, it's unlikely this build will ever be topped in speed content. Let's dive in and learn what makes it so great!

Core Setup

Core Item Build

  • Sunwuko (2) Bonus gives 50% damage reduction when Sweeping Wind is active.
  • Sunwuko (6) Bonus gives 1500% increased damage for each Sweeping Wind stack for a total of 19,500% thanks to Vengeful Wind.
  • Captain Crimson's Trimmings (2) Bonus gives 20% Cooldown Reduction and Resource Cost Reduction.
  • Captain Crimson's Trimmings (3) Bonus increases our damage by our Cooldown Reduction percentage and decreases our damage taken by our Resource Cost Reduction percentage.
  • Vengeful Wind gives us 10 extra stacks of Sweeping Wind which provides a 15,000% multiplier from the Sunwuko (6) Piece.
  • Incense Torch of the Grand Temple cuts the cost of Wave of Light in half and gives it 550% increased damage.
  • Tzo Krin's Gaze gives up to 150% Wave of Light damage, and allows us to cast Wave of Light where our mouse cursor is.
  • Pinto's Pride makes Wave of Light slow enemies by 80% and increases its damage by 150%. The slow is significant because it's applied before the damage is calculated, letting us get full value from Bane of the Trapped
  • Ring of Royal Grandeur completes our Sunwuko and Captain Crimson's Trimmings set bonuses.

Global Stat Priorities
Our offensive priorities are: Cooldown > Fire Damage > Critical Hit Chance > Critical Hit Damage > Attack Speed, along with as much Wave of Light damage as possible for speed content. We need the Cooldown to keep Epiphany up at all times and to gain damage from our Captain Crimson's Trimmings (3) Bonus. We stack Attack Speed to cast Dashing Strike and Wave of Light as fast as possible.

When solo pushing drop the Attack Speed rolls for Area Damage as too much Attack Speed will drain our spirit. Our playstyle will involve gathering up large groups of enemies to burn down with Area Damage.

Assembling the Build

1. Do the Challenge Rift for the materials to cube Legendary Powers. You can complete this once a week for additional resources and we always update the guide for you!

2. Gather the full Monkey King's Garb set. Each piece can be gambled from Kadala for Bloodshards. Do not salvage any duplicate pieces you find! Instead convert them to another part of the set with Recipe 4 in Kanai's Cube. If your last missing set piece is Sunwuko's Shines - don't gamble for it! Instead gamble for a cheap and easy item, like Sunwuko's Balance, and once again covert it with Recipe 4. If you have extra materials you can use Recipe 3 to craft the remaining pieces, but this is expensive and not recommended for new players.

3. Gamble from Kadala in this order:

  1. The full Monkey King's Garb set
  2. Pinto's Pride
  3. Nemesis Bracers
  4. Goldwrap
  5. Tzo-Krin's Gaze

4. Craft using Recipe 3 in Kanai's Cube in this order:

  1. Daibos to get Incense Torch of the Grand Temple
  2. Fist Weapons to get Kyoshiro's Blade, Vengeful Wind and Rabid Strike
  3. 1-Handed Swords to get In-Geom
  4. Anything from the Gamble list in Step 3 that you haven't already acquired.

5. Do Bounties to acquire several important items for this build:

  • Act 1: Ring of Royal Grandeur
  • Act 3: Avarice Band
  • Act 4: Can drop any bounty item from any act
  • Bounty Turn In: Recipes for Captain Crimson's Trimmings and Cain's Destiny sets.

6. At this point you can comfortably farm Nephalem Rifts or low GRs where you can find all the remaining items you need for different variants of the build. It's better to spend your mats improving your set pieces, getting ancient weapons etc.

  • Bane of the Trapped provides 60% increased damage to slowed enemies. Pinto's Pride applies the slow before the damage is calculated so we can take advantage of this gem.
  • Zei's Stone of Vengeance provides up to 80% increased damage based on how far away we are from enemies (50 yards is the maximum which is about half a screen away). This gem is amazing because we will always be hitting monsters at range.
  • Boon of the Hoarder makes monsters spray gold everywhere for our Goldwrap and 30% increased movement speed for T16 content.
  • Bane of the Stricken gives up to 2.3% increased damage on successive attack against the same target. We'll need this gem if we want to solo push to kill the Rift Guardian.

  • Wave of Light Explosive Light is our damage dealer that blows up the entire screen with a fiery bell. This skill is cast at our enemies when we wear Tzo Krin's Gaze so we can kill enemies across the screen.
  • Sweeping Wind Inner Storm is needed to gain our massive Sunwuko (6) Bonus. Our maximum stacks are increased by 10 from Vengeful Wind.
  • Epiphany Insight gives 45 spirit per second and allows us to teleport to monsters with our melee attacks. This spirit regeneration is needed to spam Wave of Light.
  • Breath of Heaven Zephyr gives 30% movement speed so we can fly through speed content faster.
  • Mantra of Healing Time of Need gives us a shield to keep up our Squirt's Necklace buff.
  • Mantra of Salvation Agility gives 40% all resistance and 35% dodge when solo pushing.
  • Crippling Wave Rising Tide all us to proc the 2nd part of Bastions of Will while solo pushing.

  • Beacon of Ytar gives 20% cooldown to keep Epiphany up.
  • Momentum gives 20% increased damage for 6 seconds after we move 25 yards (about 1/4th of a screen).
  • Seize the Initiative gives 30% attack speed when hitting enemies above 75% health.
  • Near Death Experience allows us to cheat death.
  • Harmony gives us extra resistances when solo pushing.

The Templar is recommended for this build due to his melee range and aggressive AI. When there's a monster in range he will always stand still and fight it, making him very predictable and easy to play around.

For the Skills pick Heal, Loyalty, Onslaught and Inspire. All the alternatives, except Intimidate, include AoE hard-CC, which makes mobs harder to manipulate.

Follower's damage is completely irrelevant, so we stack Attack Speed for more on-hit procs and Cooldown Reduction for more Heal. The Items are:

  • Enchanting Favor to make the Templar immortal.
  • Oculus Ring for 85% multiplicative damage boost.
  • Unity for 50% damage reduction.
  • The Ess of Johan to pull mobs together.
  • Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker for the Attack Speed slow.
  • Freeze of Deflection for extra survivability.

The idea here is to fly as fast as possible from elite to elite, dropping a Wave of Light in between each Dashing Strike. If we consistently kill elites and keep our In-geom up, we'll be able to spam our abilities permanently. The best way I know to play this is to hold force stand still and Wave of Light all the time, and tap Dashing Strike. This playstyle will cause your dash to "interrupt" your constant attacking, which will guarantee you fire a bell the second you land from your dash. The rotation is:

  1. Spam Epiphany and Breath of Heaven constantly.
  2. Activate Sweeping Wind one time. As long as you hit an enemy every 6 seconds, the your stacks will refresh. If you're traveling down long hallways or changing floors, make sure you refresh it manually to avoid losing all your stacks.
  3. Activate Mantra of Healing once every 3 seconds to maintain the shield. If you're running out of spirit, don't use this skill as often.
  4. Hold down Wave of Light and force stand still while tapping Dashing Strike to continuously attack and teleport throughout the rift.

Solo Push

When pushing we have to be much more tactical in how we play. This build is a bit squishy and grouping of enemies is required to get a proper clear.

  1. Spam Epiphany constantly.
  2. Activate Sweeping Wind one time. As long as you hit an enemy every 6 seconds, the your stacks will refresh. If you're traveling down long hallways or changing floors, make sure you refresh it manually to avoid losing all your stacks.
  3. Activate Mantra of Salvation right before you're ready to attack to make sure you can survive.
  4. Use Crippling Wave before you attack with Wave of Light to proc the second part of Bastions of Will and to keep your buff up from Spirit Guards.
  5. When the monsters are grouped, attack with Wave of Light during the Fire cycle of Conventions of Elements to burn them down. If an Oculus Ring spawns from your follower, jump into with Dashing Strike for 85% increased damage.

In speed content this build is already immortal as long as you pick up gold from Goldwrap + Boon of the Hoarder + Avarice Band. For solo if the current setup isn't tanky enough you can either add more paragon points into vitality, or drop Rabid Strike for Unity, which will make you take half damage when your follower wears one with a Enchanting Favor.

Nephalem Rifts

Since this is the best speed build in Diablo 3, this is where we belong. Flying around detonating everything with Wave of Light is our specialty. Many players will make this monk regardless of what class they main just to acquire Greater Rift Keystone as fast as possible.

The main thing to remember from the Gameplay section we already covered is you need a rhythm between Wave of Light and Dashing Strike. My favorite way to play is to put WOL on my left mouse button, hold it down constantly along with force stand still, and tap my dash. The basic idea of this in plain English is: "I'm always throwing Waves of Light, and I interrupt that with Dashes." This is a bit counter-intuitive as we usually move, and then attack. Here we perpetually attack, and interrupt that with moving. With practice you'll be flying around faster than Neo from the Matrix.

If you're having spirit issues, you can drop Mantra of Healing for Mystic Ally Air Ally for more regeneration. At high paragons you can swap Captain Crimson's Trimmings for Sage's Journey for extra deaths breaths.

Nephalem Rifts Cain Swap
T16 Cain's Swap

What do you do at the Rift Guardian when you're playing the best Greater Rift Keystone farming build of all-time? You change your gear right before you fight him to get 25% more keys from Cain's (3) Piece!

The gameplay is exactly the same as the T16 version, but we are going to carry a Cain's Insight, Cain's Traveler's and Kyoshiro's Blade in our inventory and put them on as the Rift Guardian spawns. We will lose our Captain Crimson's Trimmings along with 150% Wave of Light damage from Tzo Krin's Gaze, but we'll get more of what we really want, keys! If you're playing in groups, most builds cannot properly do this swap, so they might 1-shot the Rift Guardian for you anyway!

This is the main set up you should use for the Cain's Swap, as trying it with other Cain's pieces will make you lose your Sunwuko (6) Piece which will make you effectively deal 0 damage.

Nephalem Rifts LTK

Are you ready to style on your friends in a way they'd never expect? Bust out the Lashing Tail Kick spec for T16 farming, which is one of the fastest builds in the game! Nothing is more fun than Epiphany teleporting with roundhouse kicks to flatten your enemies! All we need to do is pick up the multipliers for this skill, including Scarbringer, Rivera Dancers and Gyana Na Kashu.

The playstyle is nearly identical to our Wave of Light friend, but instead of using bells (which have greater AOE) we'll be kicking our enemies into another dimension. Keep Sweeping Wind and Epiphany up, using Dashing Strike to move around, use Mantra of Conviction for extra damage on elites and bosses, and use Mystic Ally to regain your spirit.

If you can survive without Goldwrap, drop it and The Crudest Boots for Captain Crimson's Silk Girdle and Captain Crimson's Waders. The Cain's swap is just throwing on the boots and helmet for the Rift Guardian.

GR Solo Push
Solo Push

When pushing we need to pick up as much Area Damage (instead of Attack Speed) as possible to burn enemies down. They will not fall over to a single Wave of Light like we're used to in T16. We'll need to tactically move around the map, bring mobs together, and crush them in large packs.

To add to what was covered above in the Gameplay section, we need to set things up properly around our Fire Convention of Elements cycle. Once we have a good amount of density we'll use Crippling Wave to activate the other half of Bastions of Will. Then we'll dash away and throw Wave of Light right before the Fire cycle to spawn an Oculus Ring from our follower. Finally, as the Fire rotation hits, we'll dash into the oculus and burn everything down. Rinse and repeat until the Rift Guardian and then just spam WOL as has as possible to build Bane of the Stricken.

If you are lacking survivability, change Rabid Strike in the cube for Unity for an extra 50% damage reduction from your follower always wearing it.

Video Guide

Wave of Light

  • Sometimes this skill doesn't seem to do any damage. This can happen if a monster is directly in the center of the hit, or if there are wallers blocking the bell's path to the monster. If this happens, re-position yourself and/or break the walls with Bottomless Potion of Kulle-Aid.

Pinto's Pride

  • Applies the slow before the damage is calculated, so we can get value out of Bane of the Trapped.

Tzo Krin's Gaze

  • Changes your Wave of Light to be cast at your mouse cursor instead of on top of you.

Cain's Destiny (3) Piece

  • The 25% chance to generate another key applies to each key dropped. Example: If 4 keys drop, the game will roll 25% chance on each of the 4 keys to spawn an additional one. This means on T16 it's possible to get 8 keys in a single drop!

Bastions of Will

  • The damage bonuses from this set are multiplicative with each other, giving you a 2.25x multiplier.

  • Put together the core items and acquire the full Sunwuko set.
  • Practice interrupting your Wave of Light with Dashing Strike to move as quickly as possible.
  • Learn to swap to Cain's Destiny set on the Rift Guardian for 25% more keys!
  • Enjoy the fastest build Diablo 3 has ever seen!
