Core Setup

Core Item Build

Items

  • Inna's (2) Piece increases base Mantra and Mystic Ally buffs by 100%.
  • Inna's (4) Piece grants us all four mantra's at the same time.
  • Inna's (6) Piece gain all five Mystic Allies and have your damage increased by 950% for each one.
  • Rabid Strike mimics our spirit spenders on a nearby target when teleporting with Epiphany.
  • Incense Torch of the Grand Temple cuts the cost of Wave of Light in half and gives it 550% increased damage.
  • Tzo Krin's Gaze gives up to 150% Wave of Light damage, and allows us to cast Wave of Light where our mouse cursor is.
  • Pinto's Pride makes Wave of Light slow enemies by 80% and increases its damage by 150%. The slow is significant because it's applied before the damage is calculated, letting us get full value from Bane of the Trapped.
  • Convention of Elements gives 200% increased damage during our Fire cycle
  • Ring of Royal Grandeur completes our Inna's Mantra set.

Global Stat Priorities
Our offensive priorities are: Cooldown Reduction > Area Damage > Fire Damage > Critical Hit Chance > Critical Hit Damage, along with as much Wave of Light damage as possible for speed content. We need the Cooldown to keep Epiphany up at all times and we can stack Attack Speed to cast Dashing Strike and Wave of Light as fast as possible in T16. When solo pushing drop the Attack Speed rolls for Area Damage as too much Attack Speed will drain our spirit. Our playstyle will involve grouping up large groups of enemies to burn down with Area Damage.

Assembling the Build

1. Do the Challenge Rift for the materials to cube Legendary Powers. You can complete this once a week for additional resources and we always update the guide for you!

2. Gather 6 pieces of Inna's Mantra set (minus the weapon). Each piece can be gambled from Kadala for Bloodshards. Do not salvage any duplicate pieces you find! Instead convert them to another part of the set with Recipe 4 in Kanai's Cube. If you have extra materials you can use Recipe 3 to craft the remaining pieces, but this is expensive and not recommended for new players.

3. Gamble from Kadala in this order:

  1. All armor pieces from Inna's Mantra set
  2. Pinto's Pride
  3. Nemesis Bracers
  4. Goldwrap
  5. Tzo-Krin's Gaze
  6. The Crudest Boots
  7. Lefebvre's Soliloquy

4. Craft using Recipe 3 in Kanai's Cube in this order:

  1. Daibos to get Incense Torch of the Grand Temple
  2. Fist Weapons to get Kyoshiro's Blade and Rabid Strike
  3. 1-Handed Swords to get In-Geom
  4. Anything from the Gamble list in Step 3 that you haven't already acquired.

5. Do Bounties to acquire several important items for this build:

  • Act 1: Ring of Royal Grandeur and Pauldrons of the Skeleton King
  • Act 3: Avarice Band
  • Act 4: Can drop any bounty item from any act

6. At this point you can somewhat comfortably farm Nephalem Rifts or low GRs where you can find all the remaining items you need for different variants of the build. It's better to spend your mats improving your set pieces, getting ancient weapons etc.

Gems

  • Bane of the Trapped provides 60% increased damage to slowed enemies. Pinto's Pride applies the slow before the damage is calculated so we can take advantage of this gem.
  • Zei's Stone of Vengeance provides up to 80% increased damage based on how far away we are from enemies (50 yards is the maximum which is about half a screen away).
  • Boon of the Hoarder makes monsters spray gold everywhere for our Goldwrap and 30% increased movement speed for T16 content.
  • Bane of the Stricken gives up to 2.3% increased damage on successive attack against the same target. We'll need this gem if we want to solo push to kill the Rift Guardian.
  • Bane of the Powerful gives 20% increased damage, 15% increased damage to elites, and 15% damage reduction after killing an elite pack. This gem is useful for solo speed greater rift farming.

Skills

  • Wave of Light Explosive Light is our damage dealer that blows up the entire screen with a fiery bell. This skill is cast at our enemies when we wear Tzo Krin's Gaze so we can kill enemies across the screen.
  • Mystic Ally Air Ally we gain all 5 allies and their basic effects are doubled from our full Inna's set but we'll run with Air ally for the spirit boost.
  • Epiphany Insight gives 45 spirit per second and allows us to teleport to monsters with our melee attacks. This spirit regeneration is needed to spam Wave of Light.
  • Breath of Heaven Zephyr gives 30% movement speed so we can fly through speed content faster.
  • Mantra of Conviction Annihilation gives 16% damage and 30% movement speed when activated before killing an enemy. Overawe is another good choice if you'd prefer extra damage over the movement speed.
  • Mantra of Salvation Agility gives 40% all resistance and 35% dodge when solo pushing.
  • Cyclone Strike Implosion gathers up monsters in solo pushing and activates our Lefebvre's Soliloquy.

Passives

  • Beacon of Ytar gives 20% cooldown to keep Epiphany up.
  • Momentum gives 20% increased damage for 6 seconds after we move 25 yards (about 1/4th of a screen).
  • Seize the Initiative gives 30% attack speed when hitting enemies above 75% health.
  • Near Death Experience allows us to cheat death.
  • Harmony increases our resistances when solo pushing to help us survive.

Follower

The Templar is recommended for this build due to his melee range and aggressive AI. When there's a monster in range he will always stand still and fight it, making him very predictable and easy to play around.

For the Skills pick Heal, Loyalty, Onslaught and Inspire. All the alternatives, except Intimidate, include AoE hard-CC, which makes mobs harder to manipulate.

Follower's damage is completely irrelevant, so we stack Attack Speed for more on-hit procs and Cooldown Reduction for more Heals. The Items are:

  • Enchanting Favor to make follower immortal
  • Oculus Ring for 85% multiplicative damage boost
  • Unity for 50% damage reduction
  • Hellfire Ring for 0.9% XP boost
  • The Ess of Johan to pull mobs together
  • Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker for the Attack Speed slow
  • Freeze of Deflection for extra defense from the freezes.

Gameplay

T16

The idea here is to fly as fast as possible from elite to elite, dropping a Wave of Light in between each Dashing Strike. If we consistently kill elites and keep our In-geom up, we'll be able to spam our abilities permanently. The best way I know to play this is to hold force stand still and Wave of Light all the time, and tap Dashing Strike. This playstyle will cause your dash to "interrupt" your constant attacking, which will guarantee you fire a bell the second you land from your dash. The rotation is:

  1. Spam Epiphany and Breath of Heaven constantly.
  2. Activate Mystic Ally when low on spirit and use your Mantra of Conviction once every 3 seconds to maintain the movement speed buff. If you're running out of spirit, don't use this skill as often.
  3. Hold down Wave of Light and force stand still while tapping Dashing Strike to continuously attack and teleport throughout the rift.

Solo Push

When pushing we have to be much more tactical in how we play. This build is a bit squishy and grouping of enemies is required to get a proper clear.

  1. Spam Epiphany constantly.
  2. Activate Mystic Ally when low on spirit and use your Mantra of Salvation right before you stop to attack to make sure we have the defensive buff before becoming vulnerable.
  3. Use Cyclone Strike once every 5 seconds to gather up the monsters (especially on to elites) and to activate your Lefebvre's Soliloquy to stay alive.
  4. When the monsters are grouped, attack with Wave of Light during the Fire cycle of Conventions of Elements to burn them down. If an Oculus Ring spawns from your follower, jump into with Dashing Strike for 85% increased damage.
  5. Try to utilize your force still and Dashing Strike as much as possible to maintain our damage buff from Endless Walk.

Hardcore

Because we have our trusty trio of Goldwrap + Boon of the Hoarder + Avarice Band, we'll be invincible in speed content once we gather some gold. For solo if the current setup isn't tanky enough you can either add more paragon points into vitality, or drop Convention of Elements for Unity, which will make you take half damage when your follower wears one with a Enchanting Favor.

Variants

Nephalem Rifts
T16 Bounties and Keys

Concept
This build does best in speed content so this is where we can shine. Moving around quick and blowing up the world with Wave of Light is what we're best at. Think of this build as a great starter option if you come across the Inna's Mantra set first, however it is out-performed by the Sunwuko Wave of Light Monk which you should also check out!

Gameplay
The main thing to remember from the Gameplay section we already covered is you need a rhythm between Wave of Light and Dashing Strike. My favorite way to play is to put WOL on my left mouse button, hold it down constantly along with force stand still, and tap my dash. The basic idea of this in plain English is: "I'm always throwing Waves of Light, and I interrupt that with Dashes." This is a bit counter-intuitive as we usually move, and then attack. Here we perpetually attack, and interrupt that with moving. With practice you'll be flying around faster than Neo from the Matrix.

Setups
If you're lacking damage drop In-geom for Kyoshiro's Blade, or Rechel's Ring of Larceny for Stone of Jordan.

GR Solo Push
Solo Push

Concept
For solo pushing we're going to want to grab as much Area Damage as we can get in place of Attack Speed. Here it's going to take much more than one Wave of Light to take down our enemies so we need to be more patient and use Cyclone Strike to gather up groups for maximum damage.

Gameplay
To add to what was covered above in the Gameplay section, we need to set things up properly around our Fire Convention of Elements cycle. Once we have a good amount of density and an elite around we'll use Cyclone Strike to bring everything together. Now we must create distance between ourselves and the pack since we have Zei's Stone of Vengeance and use Wave of Light right before the Fire cycle to spawn an Oculus Ring from our follower. Finally, as the Fire rotation hits, we'll dash into the oculus ring and burn everything down. This is the moment where we use our Mystic Ally to have as much spirit as possible to make it rain! Rinse and repeat until the Rift Guardian and then just spam Wave of Light as has as possible to build Bane of the Stricken.

Setups
We'd recommend playing the build as outlined above.

Mechanics

Wave of Light

  • Sometimes this skill doesn't seem to do any damage. This can happen if a monster is directly in the center of the hit, or if there are wallers blocking the bell's path to the monster. If this happens, re-position yourself and/or break the walls with Bottomless Potion of Kulle-Aid.

Pinto's Pride

  • Applies the slow before the damage is calculated, so we can get value out of Bane of the Trapped.

Tzo Krin's Gaze

  • Changes your Wave of Light to be cast at your mouse cursor instead of on top of you.

Inna's Set

  • Inna's (2) Piece Bonus - The doubled base passive effect only applied to the unruned versions of the Mantras.
  • Inna's (4) Piece Bonus - We are given the passive effect of all mantras, but can only use the active of the Mantra that we choose to put on our bars.
  • Inna's (6) Piece Bonus - You get the 5 allies even if you do not take this skill on your bars, however taking the skill will use all of their active bonuses at the same time (and deal their respective elemental damage types). If you wear The Crudest Boots, the number of allies jumps to 10 and each active and passive ability will be used twice.

Summary

  • Put together the core items and acquire the full Inna's Mantra set.
  • Practice interrupting your Wave of Light with Dashing Strike to move as quickly as possible.
  • Activate Mystic Ally when you're low on spirit to keep the momentum going.
  • Attack during the Fire cycle of your Convention of Elements for maximum damage.
  • Enjoy your monk in all their glory and watch as many skills come together to make a fun and reliable build!
