Stats Guide

The Final Shape

Last Updated:September 19, 2024|Change Log

Your character's armor stats are one of the most important aspects of this game. They dictate your health regeneration speed, damage resistance, and Ability cooldowns. Each class prioritizes different stats based on the cooldown of their class abilities, with each build further refining these priorities. If you're not following a Build that tells you exactly what to prioritize, it's important to learn what should be prioritized.

Stats are put on a tiered scale and range from 0 - 100. Tier 1 is 10 - 19, Tier 2 is 20 - 29, and so on and so forth. Tier 10 has the fastest cooldown times, while Tier 1 has the longest cooldown times - any stats beyond 100 provide no additional benefits.

Four of the five Armor pieces a Guardian can obtain are rolled with random stats (class items do not roll with stats). Upgrading your armor, using materials, increases the energy capacity for Armor Mods. At level 10, an armor piece is "Masterworked", increasing all stats by 2.

The Stats

  • Mobility - Increases your speed when walking, initial jump height, and strafing speed. Does NOT affect sprint speed. Affects the Hunter's passive class ability cooldown rate.
  • Resilience - Raises your Shield capacity which increases your overall maximum health, reduces the damage taken from combatants, and increases flinch resistance. Affects the Titan's class ability cooldown rate.
  • Recovery - Reduces the time it takes for natural health and shield regeneration to begin and increases regeneration speed. Affects the Warlock's passive class ability cooldown rate.
  • Discipline - Decreases passive Grenade Ability cooldown rate.
  • Intellect - Decreases passive Super ability cooldown. Does not influence Super Ability generation through combat!
  • Strength - Decreases passive Melee Ability cooldown rate.

Breaking Down the Stats - The Best & Worst

While Stats support your build, builds aren't useful while you're dead. The breakdown of each Stat starts with the universal best. From there, the usefulness of a Stat may vary between each Class. It's also important to keep in mind how Armor Stat Distribution works - click or tap below for a quick and simple rundown.

Armor Stat Distribution Basic Information

Resilience, Recovery, & Mobility (& Strength on Hunters)

Resilience

In PvE, Resilience is ALWAYS the most important Stat - get this to 100, even if it means forsaking every other Stat.

  • The difference in survivability between the general baseline of 30 points in Resilience and 100 points is 47%. Things that outright one-shot a 30 Resilience Guardian only put one with 100 just under half health.
    • In practice, this comes up extremely often!
  • Every somewhat serious PvE Build Guide across the internet is going to recommend prioritizing Resilience before any other Stat. Maxroll included.
  • Worried about your Ability uptime because of your investment in Resilience? Don't be! There's tons of different ways to quickly regenerate your Abilities outside of their associated Stats, from Weapon Perks to Armor Mods, all the way to Subclass Buffs and Subclass Pickups!
    • Comparatively, supplementing the power of Resilience is much harder and you'd want to stack those effects together anyway.
  • Titans also get to take advantage of its secondary feature, making your Barricades and Thruster recharge faster!
Recovery

In PvE, Recovery serves to keep you alive amidst a firefight, in addition to being tied to Warlock's Class Ability.

  • Recovery's primary feature is empowering your ability to naturally recover health and shields by going a prolonged period without taking damage. The difference between the general baseline of 30 Stat points and 100 is 2.4 seconds, a split between reducing the delay and increasing recovery speed.
    • Warlocks take advantage of its secondary feature, making your Rifts and Phoenix Dive recharge faster. Warlocks with a Class Ability centric build should generally invest in Recovery after Resilience.
  • Recovery is a back-loaded Stat, meaning the bulk of its benefits come from having 70 or more points in it.
    • Specifically, the bonus you get going from 90 to 100 points is equivalent to the bonuses you'd get going from 30 to 60 points.
  • Having a high Recovery Stat only does something if you often go a prolonged period without taking damage, such as taking cover or dealing damage from safe distances. If your playstyle or build requires you to be in the middle of the firefight, you should not invest in Recovery.
  • Recovery isn't the only way to regenerate your health and shields. Almost every Subclass includes Aspects and Fragments that help you stay alive. There's also Armor Mods and Weapon Perks that get the job done.
Mobility for Titans and Warlocks
Mobility & Strength for Hunters

For Titans and Warlocks in PvE, Mobility is next to worthless. Do not invest into this.

  • Mobility is a PvP Stat and the Hunter Class Ability Stat. If you are not a Hunter, Mobility won't help you kill things or survive.
    • If you are a Hunter, click or tap the next tab for information specific to your Class.
  • Mobility's initial jump height bonus may be helpful for jumping puzzles. If you're struggling on one, swap your Armor Mods out for Mobility Mods to help you complete the puzzle. Just don't forget to change your Armor Mods back to what they were when you're done!

For Hunters in PvE, Mobility is helpful for getting your Dodge Abilities back.

  • Hunters with a Class Ability centric build should generally invest in Mobility after Resilience.
  • Uniquely, sometimes you don't need Stat points to invest into Mobility!
    • Playing on your Arc or Prismatic Subclass? Being Amplified gives you 50 temporary Stat points into Mobility, decreasing your Class Ability's Cooldown!
      • Using one of many Lightweight Frame Weapons? Simply holding one grants you 20 temporary Stat points into Mobility! Combine this with Amplified to reach 100 Stat points while only having 30 "real" ones.

Using Gamblers Dodge to Circumvent Strength

Most Hunter Builds use Gambler's Dodge. Those builds almost never invest into Strength. Why is that?

  • Using Gambler's Dodge near an enemy refunds a full charge of your Melee Ability.
  • It's almost always redundant to invest into Strength rather than Mobility when using this Class Ability.
    • At 100 Mobility, Gambler's Dodge recharges faster than all* Melee Abilities at 100 Strength.

Discipline, Strength, & Intellect

Discipline, as well as Strength for Titans and Warlocks

Discipline and Strength decrease your passive Grenade Ability and Melee Ability cooldown rate, respectively. They are completely identical in how they do this.

  • Discipline and Strength work by giving you a passive Ability cooldown bonus. Specifically, having 30 points in these Stats is considered the baseline, and having 100 points gives you a 100% increased cooldown recovery bonus, halving the base cooldown.
    • Not multiplier - increased. The distinction is very important since many Aspects, Fragments, and Exotic Armor Pieces do the same thing, and they stack additively - not multiplicatively.
      • If your Build hypothetically had 100% uptime on Whisper of Shards - which grants a 500% increased cooldown recovery bonus - having 100 Discipline wouldn't do as much!
  • Discipline, Strength, and all other Stats for that matter have nothing to do with "chunky" Ability regeneration sources which recharge a percentage of your Ability for meeting a certain condition.
    • Devour, for example, gives you Grenade Ability energy every time you kill something and is wholly detached from Discipline.
  • These are back-loaded Stats, meaning the bulk of its benefits come from having 80 or more points in them.
    • Specifically, the bonus you get going from 80 to 90 points is equivalent to the bonuses you'd get going from 30 to 50 points.
Intellect

Intellect dictates how fast your Super Ability passively recharges.

  • This Stat is primarily useful for PvP, since in PvE most Super Ability generation comes through actively dealing damage, killing combatants, and picking up Orbs of Power.
    • Compared to active Super Ability generation, investing into Intellect does very little to help you get your Super back. In most cases, investing into Intellect is a bad idea.
  • Builds that either do not at all care for their Melee and Grenade Abilities and thus do not need Discipline and Strength, or those that have extremely high uptime on those abilities without their associated Stats can invest into Intellect without it being a strictly bad idea.
  • This is a front-loaded Stat, meaning the bulk of its benefits come from having between 30 to 70 points in them.
    • Specifically, the bonus you get going from 30 to 40 points is equivalent to the bonuses you'd get going from 70 to 100 points.

Acquiring Armor with Desirable Stats

While you can't manipulate your Armor stats perfectly, you can influence them to gain a bonus to a Stat of your choice.

After unlocking them through Guardian Rank Progression, slot Armor Mods into each of your Armor Pieces. These allow you to get up to 50 additional points into a Stat of your choice, or among the 6 Stats however you wish.

Beyond Armor Mods, Ghost Shell Mods give you the ability to influence the random Stat Distribution of Armor that drops! Click on your Ghost Shell to apply the Stat Armorer that you need, and any newly earned Armor has a minimum of 10 points in that specific Stat.

You can find these Armorer mods in the third column of the Ghost Mods.

A great way to acquire high Stat Armor is to Focus Armor with Activity-specific Vendors. Armor obtained this way is far more likely to have high Stats compared to random garbage you pickup out in the wild. Any Vendor with Focused Decoding works for this!

Summary

Stats in Destiny 2 are important to both the Class you are playing on as well as the Build you are using. They can determine how quickly you recharge your Abilities, how resistant you are to incoming damage, and much more. It's vital to know what you are looking for in your Armor and how to improve those Stats. Regardless of Class or Build, you should prioritize getting 100 points into the Resilience Stat.
